Power Steering Gearbox

I'm installing a 76 ford power steering gearbox in my 66. I didn't have any hoses attached when I bought the box, so I need to know which hole is for the pressure side ( the large or the small ). Can anyone help with this?

Sorry for the delay in answering your post...normally the smaller hose is the pressure side. The pressure hose is always screwed into both the pump and the steering box, whereas the larger return line is just clamped onto a nipple on the pump.

Hope this helps.

I have them reversed. The pump is a saginaw unit, which has a 3/8 female fitting. The hoses were custom made at NAPA with a 3/8 male fitting on both ends to attach to both the pump and the gearbox. They told me this was the correct set up according to the specs on the factory hose fittings. What will it do to the pump and gearbox if they are hooked up wrong?

To be honest with you, I don't know WHAT would happen if the lines were reversed...if fact, I didn't realize it was even possible without cutting and splicing.

Your pump should have a female fitting (as you described) and a nipple. The fitting is for the pressure side and the nipple is for the return line. Are you saying your pump has two female fittings, or am I misunderstanding you? I don't believe I've seen a pump with two fittings for the lines.

AH! Yeah, that does make a difference.

So what are the symptoms? What problems are you experiencing?

If it was me, and I suspected the hoses were reversed, I think I'd get two barbed hose connectors, each with different sized barbs on each end, to connect a smaller ID hose to a larger ID hose. Then I'd cut each hose in half and switch them around and clamp them down with hose clamps, and take the vehicle for a spin. If the symptoms disappeared, I'd then completely remove both hoses and take them back and have new ones made up to match the new configuration.
