Polyurethane suspension bushings
Anybody ever tried these out? I'm sitting down this evening (finally) getting some more stuff on order, and am seriously thinking about using the polyurethane bushings for the rear springs, I-beam pivots and radius arm...just to stiffen the ride up a little bit. Just checked the LMC catalog and all these separately (doesn't somebody make a full kit?) it would come to about $120.
When I bought the suspension bushings for my 442, I did a lot of research and found that many people reported that the polyurethane bushings tended to squeak after a little while, whereas the polygraphite bushings did not...so that's what I got. However, I don't ever recall seeing any available for our trucks. Anybody else know if these are available?

Re: Polyurethane suspension bushings
Keith, when I needed to replace all the front-end bushings I did some research on the poly bushings and heard the same things. Another thing I found out from a manufacturer that made poly bushings (can’t remember who it was but they sounded like they knew what they were talking about) is not all poly bushings are the same. They said the regular poly bushings out there that are being sold for the radius arms are too stiff and don’t have enough compliance for the up/down movement of the suspension. They had a different poly formulation just for the radius arms with more compliance compared to the ones for the axle pivot bushings.
With that said and done, I ended up going with the inexpensive regular rubber ones for a soft and quiet ride.

Re: Polyurethane suspension bushings
Hmmm...hadn't considered that. Thanks, Barry. If you happen to remember who it was that has those softer radius arms bushings, let me know.
I wonder what the results would be in using the regular rubber bushings for the radius arms and the poly bushings for the I-beams.

Re: Polyurethane suspension bushings
I used poly bushing for the radius arms and the I-Beams on my last truck, '70 F100. I was happy with the results. I've also used a couple the poly cab mount sets, They seem to hold up well.

Re: Polyurethane suspension bushings
Did you notice any squeaking (or other wierd sounds)coming from them when you drove the truck?

Re: Polyurethane suspension bushings
most of the squeaking, and other wierd noises came frome the inside of the cab :))
No really, I traded the truck before I drove it very much. If it squeaked I never noticed it.

Re: Polyurethane suspension bushings
The busing manufacturers sell a silicone based lubricant.
Apply it to the (more is better in this case) bushing contact points during assembly and the noise is nearly eliminated.
That said, I am not sure poly busings is a big advantage for a street use truck.
I've used a lot of poly bushings on BMW's but the next one I build, I'll be very selective about which ones I use. (Anti-sway bars and steering rack.)

Re: Polyurethane suspension bushings
The polygraphite bushings I got for my 442 came from PST (Performance Suspension Technology). I dug out an old catalog and didn't see a listing for the Ford trucks, so I set the catalog out so I could give them a call today. However, before I got a chance to place that call, I got their newest catalog in the mail! Turns out they DO now carry the polygraphite bushings, in addition to the 'Original Performance' front end kits and some other cool stuff. For those of you who might have have their catalog, here are some prices:
- 'Original Performance' front end kit - $239
- Polygraphite front end kit - $269
- Sway bar kit w/regular bushings - $129
- Sway bar kit w/polygraphite bushings - $159
- Polygraphite rear spring bushings - $50
They also have suspension lowering kits and polygraphite cab/body mount kits, but only for the newer Ford trucks.
=======================
EDIT: I just went to the PST website, wondering why the 6 bushings needed for the front end would be so darned expensive. Found out that the polygraphite front end kit is a complete front end rebuild kit and contains the following
* 1 King Pin set
* 2 Outer tie rod ends
* 1 Inner Tie Rod End, Adjusting sleeve and drag link
* 2 Axle Pivot Bushings
* 2 Radius Arm Bushings
I'm going to have to call them after all. I need to find out whether their "2 radius arm bushings" actually is two sets of two...you need four of them. I also want to find out if their kingpin bushings are steel or plastic.
OK, looks like I'm going to have to sell some more parts...I need to raise some money.

Re: Polyurethane suspension bushings
I'd heard the poly bushings were generally stiffer then stock, but dunno about the squeaking...I used all stock bushings on mine. Mainly cuz they are cheap...:/
The radius arm bushings I got were only 5-6 bucks apiece. "one set, which is two pieces"
So less than 15 bucks for those total, "I'm thinking they were TRW, or something like that...The stock pivot bushings were just under $20 apiece. Mine don't squeak...I have noticed a weird thing on mine though, and I'm not sure, but it sounds like my pass side front spring makes noise when I hit bumps, even very minor ones, since I overhauled the front end. I need to check it to make sure it's seated real good, etc...I looked at it the other day, and it did look very slightly ****ed on it's seat compared to the driver side..The noise is kind of hard to describe.. Not a squeak, but more of a dull deep sounding rattle, like you might hear from a spring slightly loose, and slightly rocking or moving on it's seat...It shouldn't be, but I think I'm gonna check it...The noise is kind of aggravating after a while..Not real loud, but being I can hear it, it bugs me..I didn't really notice it before I did the kingpins, etc, and had the springs off and on...Never hear it on the driver side.. My driveshaft is also a bit noisy...Need to change my shaft carrior bearing as it's seen better days, and one more u-joint at the tranny...I've done the back two..If it still makes noise, I may have to get it balanced.
