Re: Polyurethane suspension bushings
Some PO put red bushings in my 75. I assume they are poly something. I can't notice any negative effects that are noticable over the tin can cab on that series of truck.
I think that price for a set with all the tierod ends ect. is pretty reasonable.

Re: Polyurethane suspension bushings
I see that Summit and JC Witney both offer a PROTHANE bushing kit. Is this the one you Polyurethane guys are using?

Re: Polyurethane suspension bushings
Hmmm....I'll have to dig out my latest copy tonight and check it out. They may not be the same brand, but yes, those are the polyurethane bushings we've been discussing.

Re: Polyurethane suspension bushings
OK, I finally got in gear and called PST this afternoon, to see if they would just sell the polygraphite pivot and radius arm bushings, without having to purchase the entire front end kit...they WILL do that.
=========================================
- Pivot bushings (Part Number 43124) - $20/ea. (must reuse existing bushing outer shells)
- Radius arm bushings (Part Number 47107) - $25/set (I asked the rep if a 'set' was just for one side, and he thought it included enough for both)
=========================================
Knowing that I could probably get the rubber bushings a little cheaper at someplace like AutoZone than at our local small-town parts store, I went ahead and checked the prices of the rubber bushings locally, and was quoted as follows:
=========================================
- pivot bushings - $19.69/ea.
- radius arm bushings - $9.10 per side
=========================================
Considering that the cost of the polygraphite bushings are only slightly higher than the rubber, I've decided it's well worth it to go ahead and get those. Our local parts store can also get just the steel kingpin bushings (instead of the whole kit) from Moog for $15 + freight.
So sometime within the next few days that's what I'll be doing...getting the polygraphite bushings from PST and the steel Moog kingpin bushings locally. I had considered using the nylon kingpin bushings, for ease of installation, but heard from someone that I would only get 5,000-10,000 miles on them before they'd need replacing again. That ain't good! :re)

Re: Polyurethane suspension bushings
Hummm, looks like the "zones" radius arm bushings went up a bit...I bought two sets about 3 years ago, and they were 5-6 bucks a set. The pivot bushing is still about the same price though. The ones from the zone include the shells. You'll need new seals for the kingpins if you only buy the bushings. I guess you can get those separate also..They are real thin ring type seals.
You might get a few shims also...I needed them on both sides of mine. I think I used two shims on one side, and one on the other..
BTW, I'd heard the nylon kingpin bushings didn't last, but my friends 74 has had nylon bushings he did years ago, and they are still going. He doesn't drive the truck very hard though.I used the bronze or whatever metal they are, instead of nylon in mine cuz I wanted max tuffness...:) I grease them real often. Mine might be moog also, but I forgot...I used anti-sieze paste when I put the new pins back in...Maybe make it easier if I ever have to do it again..I bought the whole kit in my case. About $60...I wanted all the parts, new pins, including the zerk fittings, shims, etc. My old ones lubed from the side. The new ones lube from the ends...I still have the side fittings too, and they don't accept much grease. MK

Re: Polyurethane suspension bushings
You made a good point on keeping those kingpins greased. My 72 has almost 200,000 on the original kingpins and they are still tight. I grease the truck every time I change the oil. It also still has all the original tie rods and U joints too but the outer tierods are starting to have a little play in them. I have seen alot of those kingpins gone because of no grease, or froze up to where you could hardly turn the truck. I have never dealt with the plastic ones but they may hold up ok if greased regularly.

Those prices are actually at our local parts store, and since they're one of only two in town, beside the dealers, their markup is a bit more than AutoZone would be....but that's about 40 miles away. I just wanted a reference point for comparison. Since now I at least know that the kingpin bushings are available separately, I'll probably hold off until I can pick some up a little cheaper while I'm on my next roadtrip that direction.

You're right, I forgot about those...hmmm, I guess I should check to make sure they ARE available separately and how much to get. Maybe I should just go ahead and get the whole kingpin kit after all, since it'll include all those smaller pieces. They're $50/set...I guess it's really not that bad. It'll probably be a week or two before I can get back at it anyway, so I'll give it some thought.

Re: Polyurethane suspension bushings
Well, I just called PST and ordered their complete 'Performance Polygraphite Front End Kit' and the 'Performance Polygraphite Bushing Set' for the rear leaf springs. The stuff should be here in a week. =D I decided that since everything is in one kit, I might as well go ahead and save a few bucks and do it that way. I talked to the sales rep and inquired whether I could just order the bushings separately, and they can be...but I also wanted to delete the steering pieces, since I've already got good pieces and have them cleaned up and painted, but he was going to then have to order the pieces I DID want separately which would have driven up the total cost, so....
I've given a lot of thought into whether I wanted to go this route vs. using rubber bushings all around, and eventually the polygraphite bushings won. I'm not sure how big of a difference they'll make, but I guess I'll find out.
Just for the record, this stuff IS on their website, I was just looking in the wrong spot. I was looking in their Ford section instead of the Truck & Van section...whoops!

Re: Polyurethane suspension bushings
Do you know if your getting everything, including the bolts. I ordered the complete kit from JC Whitney for 139.94 which included shipping. The kit did not have any bolts in it, like was pictured on their site. I had to buy bolts seperate and make all of the bushing inserts myself. I could not find the bolts and special washers anywhere else unless I purchased the original cab mounts from some where like Dennis Carpenter. Hope you get everything that you need in your kit.

Re: Polyurethane suspension bushings
Well, I have all the bolts, and if I've misplaced anything, I've got two other front-ends to borrow from. They DID say I'll have to reuse the outer shells for the axle pivot bushings, but other than that I should be OK. I'll be sure to let you all know how this goes.
