Engine/engine bay color and paint alternatives

So has anyone here ever painted their engine a color other than Ford blue? I'm kinda thinking that I'd like to paint mine in a different color, mainly so that I can detail it down the road, with pieces that will match. The truck will probably be black, I'm thinking the engine bay will either be black, or possibly the splatter paint used in GM trunk compartments (black/grey) and I'm thinking about a bright red engine. Would I become an outcast for forsaking Blue Oval blue? :))

So has anyone tried using the spray-can trunk spatter paint on an engine bay? Granted, it's designed for an interior surface...so would it hold up in an engine bay? Or is there a similar-appearing exterior paint in a spray-can that might be a better choice?

I was told that when I apply POR-15, I can apply a color coat on top of it when it's tacky, to avoid having to do extra surface prep to make paint stick to it. I was planning on using POR-15 on the firewall with another paint layer of some kind, and powdercoating the inner fenderwells and radiator support.

Open for any suggestions or observations.

You know Ford did have a red engine color. I dodn't know what years or what apps. but at my shop I have a case of Curtis brand engine enamel labeled Ford Red. It isn't like chevy red but more like IH red. Just like the color of a scout engine. I had a 67 f-100 my uncle put a 65 merc 390 in and it was painted orange. I don't know if it was faded but it looked cool with the marauder sticker on the air cleaner. Wish I hadn't sold it!

Some FE's were black with red valve covers and aircleaners.

Some were also black with gold aircleaners and valve covers.

I personally would do either a black block or ford blue.

I think the engine all red would look too Chevyish..... but I suppose it could work. It is a big engine and that will be alot of red, maybe leave the heads and intake aluminum or use black wrinkle cobra valve covers, something to break it up.

Ford Lehman diesels were ford red as well as some "Y" blocks?

I agree about the chevyish thing. I didn't know the color breakdown though. I have also seen some painted green but don't remember what ones. I like the idea of two different colors. I am partial to the ford blue. I think the blue and gold would be some thing to look at. Also they were my high school colors way back when.

After seeing Rijar's engine in the photo gallery I have decided to be somewhat dramatic with my engine compartment, block dark ford blue, Air cleaner and valve covers Ford Red, exahust manafold and battery trays school bus yellow, plus various other parts throughout the engine compartment painted those colors.

I have used the splatter paint on the inside of the bed sides. It held up pretty well and any scratches were easy to repair.
The local hobby store carries a line of speckled spray paint in veriouscolores..not sure how this would work in an engine bay.
Maybe a combination of the dark and light shade of Ford blue??
I'm very color blind..hush my mouth
Dt.

I remember reading a restoration article were they sprayed a clear coat over the splatter paint. Supposedly this would hold up better. I wonder if the paints would be compatible, maybe a paint rep could help answer.

We use splatter paints alot in the trunk of the car we restore. It has a habit of flaking off after a while and you get little green/white/orange flakes drifting around the trunk and car. As mentioned, get a clear coat of some sort to topcoat with, lay 1-2 coats and it will solve this problem.

My '68 is Lunar Green, the PO had the engine bay done in black, and the engine was painted a medium met. green. I must say I rather like it. Ford Blue would clash (if you care about such things), and red, well...

My mustang in the background of some of my truck pics, is painted 72 corvette yellow. (thus explaining why it was so slow). But I painted the engine the same color and it looks good but shows dirt very badly.
