tailgate handle and surround install
How hard is this to do? I got a voice mail message from the place doing the paint on my truck. They said they didn't want to put the old severely pitted handle and surround back on the truck. A buddy wants to sand blast and zinc coat the pieces. I'm not sure how well this will turn out, so I was thinking I'd leave the handle off and try out the zinc kit. If it doesn't turn out, I'd cough up the bucks for new pieces.
Question is, how hard is it to get the linkage or whatever it is hooked up so it functions right? If its a PITA, I'd rather just go ahead and buy new and have the shop do it right for free. If its easy, I'd like to experiment with the zinc kit.

Re: tailgate handle and surround install
Well, removing and re-installing the hardware is easy. I just completely stripped a tailgate of all it's hardware a couple days ago...took about 10 minutes. The handle is only held on by two small bolts and the surround by four screws. Then you just pull it back enough to pop two clips connecting the handle to the latch rods, and pull it out. I'll have to look, but I believe I've got a couple good ones. In fact, I've got one complete tailgate hardware set up on E-bay right now. CLICK HERE to check out that auction. The handle has some surface rust, but no pitting.

Re: tailgate handle and surround install
Like Keith said, getting it off is a snap. Putting it back together, however, requires three hands so get a helper.

Re: tailgate handle and surround install
Well, I had to reinstall my tailgate assembly yesterday and I have found that my earlier comment was dead on - YOU NEED THREE HANDS! It took me over an hour but it's on there and I ain't never, no-how takin' it off again!
