Not without custom brackets... (emoticon( Step bumpers might be a little easier to modify, though, since they're normally flat across the back, but would still involve drilling new holes in the bumper. Probably not worth the effort.

The brackets would actually be 64-72. I think 64 was the year the chrome factory bumper was introduced. With these brackets bringing $125-$150 on ebay I think you could do some mods to make something different work. I got a set of the brackets in question for $40 at a swap meet a couple months ago and they came on a bumper that was a little too rough to save. I also talked to some guys who sell rechromed bumpers and they apparently don't know what those brackets are worth because they just pitch them aside whenever they get them I have their card but I have missed them in the couple attempts I made at calling their shop. I will try again to contact them. I think they are on the road alot doing swap meets.

Bububbbuuubut I want a big honkin' chrome bumper on the back of my truck that says "this will hurt you more than it will hurt me"

 (emoticon(

So it'd be easier to drill holes in the bumper rather than fabricate custom brackets?

Can the brackets on it now be rebent, then heat treated?

Don't worry, those things are a dime a dozen at any salvage yard you go to. I've personally tossed several of them in pretty good shape, 'cause I didn't want them and they'd be WAY too heavy to ship if I were to sell it. I'd imagine you could pick one up pretty cheaply.

So how much bending are we talking about?

Because I'll have a spare set of brackets since whatever bumper I get I'll grab the brackets with it, might get them for free if I pretend they're part of the bumper :P

Should I have the brackets on my truck done or should I do the ones on the bumper, or does it really matter? How much will this cost, $20? $50? $100?

Well, I don't have any step bumpers around anymore to use as a reference, so what I'm about to suggest might be offbase, but I'll try anyway.

I'm thinking that the square-box shape of the step bumper would mean that the brackets could be installed anywhere along it's inside face, just by drilling new holes where the bracket meets the bumper...or at the very least, welded together at that point. Obviously I have no idea what kind of brackets are currently on your truck or what would be on the bumper you bring home, but I don't think bending is gonna do the trick, and it's certainly going to weaken the bracket.

Like I said, these old step bumpers are very plentiful in the salvage yards. I'd guess that 98% of the '67-'72 trucks there will still have a step bumper on the back, which will bolt right up to your frame. You'd be WAY ahead by just grabbing one from a '67-'72 truck so the bracket spacing is correct, instead of Mickey-Mousing around and trying to fit something with different framerail spacing. You'll be much happier in the long run, and it'll look a whole lot better.

I'm having a little trouble following this thread with the talk about step bumpers and brackets.

The older vintage step bumpers (not the new FEY ones you can buy at Pep Boys) have the brackets welded on, they are part of the bumper and it's not practical to remove them. I've got a couple of them laying on the garage floor, one will go on the truck and the other pitched.

I was wondering about that. I couldn't remember if the step bumper brackets were welded on or not. Thanks, Barry.

OK, since they ARE welded on, then Barry's right, they'd be impractical to move. Sounds like you're just going to have to bite the bullet and find one with the proper bracket spacing, like one from a '67-'72 truck.

Well the bumper I have is technically a step bumper, with a tow ball on it, and a working license plate light, but it's painted white and has metal plates on either side:

However, this is the kind of bumper I want:

full chrome face, with a drop in the middle, and connectors for a towing harness...

Those drop bumpers are made for our trucks as well, though they're probably gonna be a little harder to find in the salvage yards. Here's a pic of one on a '70 I parted out. It's too bad you weren't a little closer...the shipping on something like this would be prohibitive:

If it's just the drop feature you're wanting, to lower the tongue on the trailer, you can get a square receiver that bolts onto the bottom of the step bumper, which should lower things 4-6 inches.
