The “Greatest Hits" of Ladies of the Shadow Gallery

The “Greatest Hits of Ladies of the Shadow Gallery” idea has been on my mind for some time, in part fueled by my own frustration when I page back through voluminous threads, trying to find the discussions and insights I remember so fondly from the board’s early days of impassioned debate about what this piece of fiction all meant and why it hooked us all.

If I have difficulty finding these gems of intense debate and insight, I imagine that it is probably only by accident that “Newbies” stumble upon them. Thus I propose this index of sorts for them, but also for the old “shipmates” who would just like to go back and refresh their memories, and perhaps, dare we hope, respond to any new questions and thoughts with that old passion that gripped us all so intensely.

I am sure we all have our personal favorites back in the archives. In starting this thread I will put forth my particular favorites, but sincerely hope that others will do the same. It would be a shame if this became “pwsull’s Greatest Hits of LOTSG” rather than a more balanced index of all of the most important ideas.

Let Us Begin!!!!:

So, in typical self promoting fashion, I will contribute the first entry to this thread. I apologize that it is heavy in referencing my own essays and contributions; but to quote Han Solo at his most charmingly self centered:
 “Hey!..... it's me”.
You guys get your turn next.

In my opinion there are a few seminal threads here that contain some of the best revelations about the Mystery of V. I have contributed heavily to them, but so have a number of others who have wished to explore far beyond the surface of the narrative: MelindaKitty, CyranoRox, Venturous (and her earlier incarnation Willow7302), Alexandra123, Vienna7, Electryone, Calypso, Doctor Delia, Sultana, Leda74, BohWea, ButMadNNW, RedZen, and Valkyrie2 (who I think at times provoked some of us to fits of apoplexy). They and many others have stimulated us with word and idea and essay. And let us not forget FriendlySolarFlare in her own unique, brilliant interpretation of image/words/sound which slowed and syncopated the story for us as we thirsted for more while wandering in the V desert that occupied the time between theater run closing and DVD release. My apologies to anyone I have inadvertently left off my list of Greatest Hits artists. I am sure others will identify them and showcase their work here.

My Greatest Hits List:

VENDETTA VERBIAGE

“About The Mirror Breaking Scene” by Alexandra123
An overlooked gem of an interpretation of what I believe is the pivotal dramatic scene of the entire film…Alexandra where have you gone! We need you back! I karma you again!

Disturbing Themes of Sado-Masochism by pwsull
What can I say? I said I would be self promoting. This thread wandered off topic a bit at times, but I did some of my best big concept idea mining and writing here as did many others. I am particularly enamored of Melinda’s page 2-3 response to CyranoRox’s suggestion that what happened in the film’s torture sequence can’t really be considered sado-masochistic, or at least all that traumatic or damaging to Evey. She presents us with both a primer on BDSM , and a beautiful literary analysis of the dramatic narrative titled :V was Forged in Fire, Evey Was Tempered in Water that is among the best pieces I have seen anyone write about this film. But what the hell!! Everyone should read the thread…about 60% of it is really great stuff!!! Tooting my own horn, I kind of like my page nine riff on the trauma based, unrequited love that seems to be steaming between V and Evey.

DRAMATIS PERSONAE

The Finch Character Discussion Thread by euphonius
Again self promoting because I really love to debate with Vienna7, but this is really great stuff about what makes Finch tick and a bit about what might be going on between him and Evey .

Dr. Delia and V by ButMadNNW
Our Doctor Delia, Vienna7, and I go deep into the immorality of Delia Surridge’s behavior and its dramatic demonstration of the “slippery slope” which occurs in science when the quest for knowledge is hijacked by egotism, greed, economics, and politics, taking us to immoral places.

THE LOVE SEAT

The Little Things That Sparkled by Bohwea
This is a huge thread of everyone’s favorite moments in the film. But some things have had some extra attention, analysis and nurturing. I particularly love Venturous’ discovery of Venus’ role in the post torture interaction between V and Evey (page 30).

Image

I will also put in yet another plug (I know, I know…Vienna is thinking "when the hell is he going to shut up about this already") for my romantic interpretation of the Finch-Evey flash-forward in Finch’s “It was just a feeling” revelatory montage. And stick around for all of the discussion that followed from pages 24 to 27, including “Psychodynamics 101” (my little attempt at sharing some watered down expertise) .

Image

Check out Dr Delia's excellent connecting of the V for Vendetta romance story to Carl Jung's theorizing (she says she's "no scholar"...yeah...right) on archetype, animus and anima on page 54. She quotes Jung's ideas on the unconscious meanings of man who is turned into a monster in all of those fairy tales (like Beauty and the Beast to which our story clearly is an hommage.) Following Jung's lead, Bruno Bettelheim later, further expands on these ideas in his classic The Uses of Enchantment Check it out!

The Erotic Dynamics of Alliteration, or Why it Felt That Way byCyranoRox
CyranoRox, the master/mistress at work! The entire thread should be required reading. It does wander a bit at times (and there was that awful spat between me and Calypso) but there are many moments of brilliance, especially in the latter half from page 11 to 17. (...and toot-toot, "Hey!...It's me"...MK's reaction to my "Why Women Identify With Evey" essay still cracks me up!!!) And read on to the next post for her marvelous essay about how men and women are different.

What With the “Theories” About V Being Gay…by RedZen
Great debate on the subject that occurs to just about everyone who watches this film. Page 2 and 3 are especially good in regards to how the viewer might resolve this question. And Hey!, .... ain't it great that Krydium, Vadin/JAD, and I aren't the only guys in this rarified cloud of estrogen? GO REDZEN!!!!!

COMPUTERNOVELS

This entire division of LOTSG is a greatest hit! The creation of our one and only FriendlySolarFlare, each of her storyboards are a work of art that slow and syncopate the narrative and give each scene increased power and poignancy!!!

LITERARY LOUNGE

And What Exactly Does All That Shakespeare in V Mean? By pwsull
This thread originally inspired by Alexandra123 and nurtured by our resident Shakespeare scholar ButMadNNW provides illumination of the iambic pentameter that adds such weight and magic to V’s dialog.

VICTION

ACT V, scene I by MelindaKitty
is my favorite piece of V-fiction, but anyone who is serious about V should check out anything that the Devine Madame Minou and our Fearless Leda have written at:

All of The Works of Leda and Melinda at Leda’s “V-Shrine” site: *http://leda1974.bravehost.com/index.htm*

Leda also has a great picture gallery of “The Real Life” Lark Hill and Shadow Gallery on display there.

V for Vendetta: The Best Cautionary Tales Entertain by pwsull
Reallllly Self Promoting! (and not really a "Greatest Hit") What the Hell!!! Maybe someone will read my V4V movie review if it's not languishing back on page three or four of Viction where no one can find it!

(Editor's note 3/20/07: at the request of our admins I have added links to as many of the "Hits" as I can manage...hopefully RunBoard won't change the URL's and they will keep working!!!)

emoticon Thanks Vivified!! Glad you like it and find it useful!

Melinda and ButMad suggest some basic rules which were part of my original concept....but I found myself swept away in the torrent of my favorites, many of which really turn out to be mini-seminars of brilliant interactional posts by several authors. They are right however, the way I presented it in my first post will be ungainly and will not really give credit where it is due to specific board members.

quote:

Here is Ms Kitty's idea:

"Tell the person's name. Quote the post that struck you as excellent. Put in a link to the specific page of the thread where you first encountered it. Then tell WHY or HOW the comment affected you so deeply."

The only technical bug in this suggestion is that in my experience RunBoard sometimes changes the URL's of specific posts making the link you set up ineffective (I used to set up reference links to board posts all of the time; they originally worked fine, but I now find that most of them come up with the RunBoard error message "This Web Address Does Not Exist". This does not ever appear to be a problem with external links out of the RunBoard site.)

Thanks to the admin staff for their support and suggestions!!!

Thank you pwsull,
I'm really enjoying catching up on my reading. I'm kind of a semi-newbie myself. I didn't come over from the IMDb until June or July of last year, so I missed out on a lot!
Oh, and thanks for the positive mention.

I too joined the board around the same time as you DD. Looks like I'm mentioned too by pwsull, however, I don't think I contributed that much as the others since I came late as well. I do regret having not been on the board earlier as I did see this forum mentioned on the movie website's "talk-back," but I was way too busy and focused on school then.

I do wish Valkyrie2 would return to the board. I miss her greatly. emoticon I loved her provocation and inquisitive mind. In fact, she pissed me off when I first came to the board, but we worked it out and I came to really appreciate her, flaws and all.

Personally, I miss Leda and Boh's presence here. Their sharp wits kept me in tears from laughing so dang hard!

I'm gonna tiptoe in here with one Hit.

On the subject of our beloved Leda, the Chanceloratix herself, this is part of the reason I fell for the woman:

She started a thread called "My perversity has reached a new low..."

And began with these oh-so-simple words:

I spent fully ten minutes today wondering whether V goes commando.

We now return you to your regular programming.

Who would've thought that a handful of words could reduce us all to such delightfully perverted thoughts? Me, I couldn't get the images and quandry out of my head. To this day, I'm not sure if it was torture or reward.

And be sure to see all the suggestions for the boxers; they're priceless.

Just don't try to drink anything while reading unless you have a waterproof computer.
