Website design?

Hi, all ~

I have it in mind to build a website.

The last website I had was back in the late 1990s when I was still on AOHELL. It was hosted on AOL, had a super-long AOL member URL, and was built with an idiot-proof template.

This time around I want to get a domain name, so I don't have to deal with www.whatever.com/member/butmadnnw/etcetcetcetcetc/ - And, I want to take a stab at trying to sell some of my photography. Other features will likely be a links page, maybe a blog... In the future, I may want to use it for my writing (i.e. if I publish something, use the website as a way to communicate with my readers)...

So I've started poking around, and am thoroughly confused. Does anyone have any input on where to host? Where to register the domain name? (GoDaddy.com looks promising for both of the above; any thoughts?)

I might just start with a free site and point a domain at it, but free sites have limitations... At the same time, I don't have a ton of money to invest in what may be a dead-end project (for now).

Any help would be appreciated. (Please phrase said help in the simplest terms possible.)

*pokes Bohwea, Vendetta Vixen, Venturous, FSF* If I manage to get something together, can I entreat any of you lovely Visual Vixens for some graphic design? Of course everything would be properly credited and I'll provide a link to any site you wish. emoticon

emoticon THANK YOU!! in advance. emoticon

My site is hosted at B-one Webhosting, they give you 500 MB for what equals I think $3-4 pr. month. I've never had any problems with my site, no downtime that I'm aware of.
They even help you with the registration of a domain name, www.butmadnnw.com is available btw emoticon

I'll be glad to help you as much as I can, but I'm not that skilled regarding website coding, as my own site is build using old fashioned html only, I just haven't taken the time to catch up with things like PHP and java.

Please feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer emoticon - and I must say that I'm honored being mentioned in the same sentence as Boh, Vendetta Vixen & Venturous regarding graphic design emoticon emoticon

Hmm... I'll definitely look into that, though GoDaddy offers 5GB for about the same (but no setup fee), and if you buy anything non-domain from them, you can get a domain for $1.99.

Some of the other differences, like transfer limits, are a bit of a mystery to me...

emoticon Good to know, except I'm probably going to register the title of my old site (now defunct), because I liked it and it said what I wanted the site to be for my visitors. I don't want to post it here and have someone stake a claim on it behind my back (call me paranoid). You'll just have to wait and see. emoticon But I will say that my name will stay ButMadNNW, and that does tie in to my intended site name somewhat.

I'll probably be using HTML myself, at least to start. What I do know about HTML is self-taught. Like I said, I started with an idiot-proof template for my old site. But by poking around and examining the code, I taught myself a few things about the language.

Re: Website design?

Butmad, sorry the late delay, I consider these things
emergency but I was off.

For a free starting point with more than you´ll ever
need for a start, I suggest;

           http://www.officialfreedom.com

though you´ll have a free domain name like;

       http://butmad.officialfreedom.com

you´ll get:

• 2,048 MB Space
• 25,000 MB Data Transfer
• 10 Subdomains
• 5 FTP Accounts
• 5 Email Accounts
• 1 Email List
• Unlimited Email Forwarders
• 3 MYSQL Databases
• 1 Park Domain
• 1 Add-on Domain
• Script Library
• PHP-Perl-CGI Support
• FrontPage Extension
• Latest cPanel
• 24/7 Support
• Price: Absolutely Free!

1) This is a very speedy Host, very important.

2) 2000 Megabites disk space is plenty, indeed.

3) 25.000 Megabites monthly transfer is way more
than enough for what you say you need, really!

4) With the scripts library you can install (one-click)
on-line stores, chat rooms, boards, forums, blogs, etc.

5) up-time is good, no matter if it´s free or paid.

           You may also try;

 http://www.liberty-host.com/adhosting.php

Very speedy host yoo, and same caractheristics as
officialfreedom. You can even register both!. emoticon

I sugest caution with godaddy, please see the following
link for a review on them and other options:

HERE

Notice that you can buy a domain ONLY and then
choose a host, so you may choose a good and big
cheap pack, with everithing you wish. The "all in
one" packages are just easyer, and sometimes bad.

As for web page creation, I´m a disaster, html only.

You can always choose a nice origional template!. emoticon

Frindly solaire´s option is good also, and "unlimited"
transfer is good for some things...though there´s
nothing like unlimited, really. But it´s a speedy Host,
I´ve tried it, and up-time is indeed good, true.

ALWAYS check a host speed and up-time. Crucial.

5 GB? emoticon whoa, there's just not enough competion here in Denmark emoticon B-one is I think the cheapest way to get a host here, except of course the free sites emoticon

I looked it up, there's no transfer limits at B-one, but as kry said, there probably is no such thing as "no limits". But as long as you don't use it to stream large files, I don't think you'll get in any kind of troubles though emoticon

Good idea not to publicly mention your new domain before you've claimed it yourself, a little paranoia can be useful sometimes.
"It said what I wanted the site to be for my visitors" - this has however made me very curious about what the domain will be emoticon so I hope you'll have it up and running soon emoticon emoticon

I did just the same emoticon I even started out in Notepad, but have moved on to a html editor, which makes things a lot easier.

Re: Website design?

I use an outfit like cheap-domainregistration.com
and pay 7.98 a year for a .com domain.

Then I've found it's really best to avoid all "free" webhosting.. Seriously.
I use the cheapest and most reliable hosting I can find though, and so far page-zone.com
has been my personal favorite. 4.95 a month for everything you're going to need. Trust me.

Actually building a site is a whole other story. That's up to you. But I'd suggest downloading

WS_FTP
or any free ftp client, and Notepad2
which is a handy user-friendly little HTML editor.

Along with Photoshop, those are the basic requirments to start and run a decent site that won't crash and has full functionality with no banners or ads.

-My site, BrettWilson.org
is set up just like I described above. I have a blog, a forum, a gallery, etc. It costs me 4.95 a month for my two visitors a year.

emoticon All I see there is a post from 2002 complaining that their customer service response time was too slow?

Anyway, thanks for the input, kry and Vadin! emoticon I agree with Vadin about free hosts - I don't like the ads and I've had trouble with free hosts in that past. For instance, I lost a bunch of pictures one time because I wasn't fast enough building a page on that host, so they accused me of data warehousing and deleted everything. emoticon

I'm also getting advice from the good Admiral offboard, so I'll sift all the data and see what I come up with. emoticon Keep the advice coming, though!

(And Vadin, please restore the video of your daughter, you curmudgeon, you. I didn't mean any offense, but I really do think she's better off in the "protected" area, don't you?)

Re: Website design?

I have recently made a website for an artist friend of mine. The pictures look great but she has expressed a concern about people being able to print decent quality versions of her work.

Has anyone had any experience with this? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. emoticon

I have considered saving all the images as 'Flash' docs, but there are loads and loads of them, it would take forever. As would layering a transparent gif over the top of the picture.
Disabling the right mouse click is fairly pointless, I think.

Anyone got the answer? emoticon

I'm sorry, I can't help you. But you're right about disabling the right mouse click - it won't help at all.

Not when Print Screen exists. emoticon

I've been wondering the same thing, because I'd like to try selling some photography and obviously don't want people just printing their own copies.

The only things I've been able to think up are:
1) have lowish-quality thumbnails on the site that will pixelate and look ugly at larger sizes. But if the thumbnail's too small, how will the person now what the picture looks like and if they want to buy it?

2) Have a watermark over the picture...

I don't know. If you think of something, F4E, let me know! emoticon
