Hmmm ... are you using Windows XP, and do you have service pack 2 installed? THAT firewall may be causing your problem with the chat - or if you have PeerGuardian2 installed. When I completely closed all firewalls - I was able to get in. Oh, and Firefox has absolutely nothing to do with it - that's the same browser I use.
As for the not being able to see the older smilies - have you updated windows recently?

Cyg - Yes, I have Windows XP. (I'm not entirely sure about the Service Pack 2 - but I think may very well have it installed as I have my computer set up to do automatic updates.)
Oh! And I finally was able to figure out why the smilies weren't showing up - Firefox was blocking them, along with other images/pics.
