Re: Bored and between stories
Well, this may be my last post, but here goes....
Why is it necessary to criticize the posts of other people so much? I especially resent those barbs directed towards Biscom and others who diligently search through all of the old posts in an effort to revive the conversation. OK, so they are not offering up brilliantly witty bon mots, photo manips, or page-long dissertations on V's motivations. But they do have a right to express their opinions without everyone piling on. They are not disruptive, or rude, or obscene, so what's your beef?
I personally don't mind if people criticise me; I'm a big girl and perfectly capable of giving as good as I get. But I think this poisoned atmosphere has contributed to the demise of this board (more than lack of interest in "V4V" or the start of the school year or any other excuse you can make.)
Can only certain people post here? Has this board become an exclusive little kaffeklatsch? I hope not. I would hope that the message of the film ("that fairness, justice and freedom are more than words. They are perspectives.") is not being lost on some members.
Frankly, this board deader than a pile of V's victims. And this saddens me, because I think there are others who although they have come a little late to the party just might have something interesting to say.

Re: Bored and between stories
Delia...
I'm sorry if you've seen something that distresses you, but may I make some points in mitigation? Speaking for myself, the last thing I would ever wish to do is to sequester this board from new members. If that were the case, I wouldn't still be posting on the IMDb board (which I do not only because I like it there, but mainly to keep the link to this forum in the eye of the passing public.)
I've been online for eight years now, and in that time I've been a "regular" in several groups. Believe me, so far, this is the nicest place I've ever had the pleasure of attending. I could direct you, for instance, to a Yahoo chat room whose regulars indulge in more *****ery, backbiting, libel and all-round bad behaviour than you'd find backstage at the Miss World contest.
There is never going to be a place devoid of any friction whatsoever - not unless there's only one visitor and, even then, that's no guarantee. I've had some pretty fierce arguments with myself in the past.
We all have our off days. And yes, some of us take it online. The theory that the medium of text allows us to think before speaking only works most of the time.
I'll give you a karma point as my way of asking you not to leave, Doc. If it's because of what I have said or done in the past, then reprimand me. Please don't blame the entirety of the membership for it.

Re: Bored and between stories
My post was never meant as criticism or as a "barb" - it just made me smile a little that Biscom posted her comment five months after Leda had posted hers.
This is the friendliest place I've encountered during my years online, I try to help keep it that way, and can only regret it if something I've said has been offensive - that has never been my intention.

Re: Bored and between stories
Oh, how did I miss this tasty morsel of a thread?
Dr. Delia, out of all the threads to post in, I wouldn't have picked this one for your excellent point.
I have been on newsgroups now for almost 7 years and I've found that what has social value in such groups is witty, creative writing and intelligent debate. Those that aren't that good at these two skills, don't become too popular or are even ignored. Some realize this off the bat and don't post, but continue to lurk. And it is a real shame because I think all of us have something of worth to contribute, even if not stated in a "page-long dissertation." (I had to laugh at that one Delia because I thought the same thing.) And some of us (like me) are not natural writers and have a challenging time conveying thoughts and feelings in this medium.
I think we also have to remember that there are many young women on this board, some only teens. Because of this, we have to be more tolerant and understanding, and them of us. I am on the other V4V board where most are under 25 yrs. old and I feel I can just let my hair down A LOT more on that board than this one. But I do like the balance of posting on both boards.
And in regard to your last two paragraphs, Delia - I have been in the same lines of thought for the past few weeks. I guess I just don't take forums/newsgroups all that seriously anymore, after all they are sort of a fantasy world. In most cases, members never meet and establish relationships with each other. I put much more weight on stuff going on IRL.
Okay, I got long winded again...

The truncheon is not wholly unlike words; both can be swung wildly to hurt. Did I do so? I once snapped back hard when two persons went on about stalking. And I took you up, all in fun, about what needs to be provided to a guest. [Marriage and menopause disable me from the last requirement] But it's mostly good fun and fencing and I would like you to stay.

Re: Bored and between stories
Apologies Chancellor (Leda), FSF, Vienna 7, Cyrano, and anyone else I may have flamed. I guess I just had a hard day.
quote: Vienna7 wrote: I think we also have to remember that there are many young women on this board, some only teens. Because of this, we have to be more tolerant and understanding, and them of us.
I guess this is the point I wanted to make but I didn't express it specifically.
quote: And Vienna7 goes on to add:I've found that what has social value in such groups is witty, creative writing and intelligent debate. Exactly. I've been posting on a couple of sites for a few years now, but when I first started, I think I would prefer to be ignored than rebuked, however mildly.
As for the page-long dissertations, I'm guilty as charged!

I totally agree. This is THE nicest site I have ever been a part of, and I too have been on some pretty fractious boards myself, where arguments can go on for months.
I came rather late to this site because of problems I had with my computer (I'm barely computer-literate, you see.) But I've been conversing with some of you at the IMDb since the movie opened in April, under a different name, of course. And I appreciate a civilized discussion devoid of fan-boys demanding to know whether V would kick Spider-Man's a** or vice versa.
Anyway, HAPPY GUY FAWKE'S DAY, EVERYBODY! Since nothing has blown up yet, I think we can safely take some time out of our daily lives to actually celebrate.
