Hi Straightedge
Welcome! Just because we've been talking on a topic is no reason not to join in. Check out the old threads, by all means, but dont feel limited by them.

Here, I was thinking of the old useage: 'Mama, Mr Smith has been making love to me for an hour in the parlor'; also John Searle's Speech Acts, essays on philosophy of mind.

But I do think the template is there in the dialogue: comic, metaphorical, elaborate; a number of moves and surprizes; the usual masculine point of committment, without loss of style; a witty ending with not-ever-failing courtesy.

Hate to say it, but me either.

I've been thinking more of the 'wooing' aspect of V and and the tease rather than the actual act. To me, I guess, the actual act just takes all the fun out of it for me. I guess I'm a fuddy dud that way, I guess.

Please allow me to play Devil's Advocate again. Operating under the assumption that people are often the exact opposite of what they advertise themselves to be, I would say that (even under the best of circumstances) in bed V would probably be at best quite ordinary, maybe a little uptight, maybe even impotent.

We know he has issues about his body. Gee, if he feels uncomfortable being seen with his gloves off, I can't imagine him giving anyone The Full Monty. (Even in the dark.) Also he feels that the face under the mask is not him. How weird is that? I understand what he means, but I think like a priest, he has ceased to be a corporeal being. He has totally negated his former self (The Man in Room V) by consciously forgetting how he was or where he came from.

There is some small trace of residual self-image though, otherwise he would be a monster, which is why he is so touching. I think the truly moving part of this film, the part that makes you ache with desire and pity, is that V is truly off-limits.

Ironically, it's only behind the mask that he is truly free.

Ordinary, or uptight is fine by me. I wouldn't expect someone who's some sort of expert on any type of sex.

Ditto here. I wouldn't complain. As long as he brought along his mask and those silky black leather gloves.

Oh, I love advocates for the devil. emoticon

I don't think V advertised himself to be a good lover, only that he is a lover of culture and the sensuous. A lot would depend on how much physical damage was done to his uh, "private parts." Continuing on...

I tend to agree with you here. He apparently has disassociated from his physical body, except in its value to be used as a weapon. However, I think what redeems V is that he is still tied to all that has beauty, truth, and sensuousness in life. Because of this, he still is connected to the energy that gives rise (no, I didn't intend the pun) to making love. What I think V needs is time and a trusted lover - one who is his best friend (as corny as that sounds). Of course, if he's going around torturing all potential lovers, that doesn't give him a lot of good chances now, does it? It also presupposes that V has worked on some of his mental/emotional baggage. Still, if he ever did find someone and they shared a very intimate bond and with time, I think V could be a great lover and it would be very healing for him on all levels. Think of all that pent-up sex energy for the last 20 years! Woo Hoo! Volcano Sex! emoticon emoticon emoticon
