Don't feel bad, FSF! Shakespeare is difficult to understand at times (I usually have to re-read it at least once or twice for it to make sense to me ). I can't even begin to imagine how much more difficult it is to understand when it's in a foreign language!
Thanks V Dazzled

Maybe a full, say, audio clip? I mean...full...
give me some feedback.
note...could be streaming and or...welll....downloaded,
to a prepared format to play nicely on your ZEN!
friendlysolaire, what do you think abou this? is it
exagerated?...somehow i think people just want to
get those particulary parts, i don´t know!....
I think it sounds like a good idea, krydiam.
I don't know how many would be interested in a full version though - until now the requests have been for V's lines (and one of Finch's).

Re: friendlysolarflare's MP3 Request Thread
indeed, i heard it all now at it is quite strange without
the video.
as i´ve edited and said some posts ago, things are
nice like this.
I really admit enjoying more these takes than a full
2 hours audio, lol.
keep the good work!

Well, because I can - it ends with V walking past the dominoes and picking up the last one - I just looooove the sound of his sloooow footsteps
You read my mind!!! I love those footsteps myself, but I wasn't sure how long the clip was going to end up being, so I didn't ask for them...
I'm glad you liked the footsteps too

New request: V does Hamlet!
Here you go: "We are oft to blame in this, 'tis too much proved, that with devotion's visage and pious action, we do sugar o'er the devil himself" "What's that mean?" "Spare the rod."

Re: friendlysolarflare's MP3 Request Thread
*squoobles FSF* Thanks, dear!
*dons English major hat* As for what it means, "We are oft to blame in this, 'tis too much proved, that with devotion's visage and pious action, we do sugar o'er the devil himself"....
Basically, my reading of it is something along the lines of "It is seen too often that we commit horrors, but make them okay because they were performed in the name of our religion (or by upstanding, religious people)." In the original context of Hamlet, Polonius has just asked his daughter, Ophelia, to "walk here in the hall... [and] read on this book, that show of such an exercise may color your loneliness." It's pretty likely that the book he gave her was some religious text, and he asks her to make a show of reading it, to indicate to Hamlet when he arrives that she is alone in the room. Meanwhile, Polonius and Claudius hide themselves to spy on the young couple. So, the line that V quotes is Polonius acknowledging that he is asking Ophelia to hide the spying by acting pious.
How was that? Clear as mud? I am willing to accept challenges or corrections from other Shakespearean "scholars."
I've studied enough Shakespeare that I can usually get at least a sense of the meanings in the first read, but I don't deny his work is pretty tough sometimes. But if one takes the time to put some study into it, the language is lovely and actually makes more sense than most people think.
The V context is also interesting: V quotes the line after Willy cries out, "Christ, have mercy!" Considering what he'd just been up to, Willy using a religious exclamation makes V's Hamlet quote very appropriate. Which is just one more thing to love about him - quoting Shakespeare is one thing, but coming up with a line on the spot that's apropos to the real world situation? That takes talent.
krydiam, making the full-movie audio available to some might not be a bad idea - those savvy enough to do so can then make their own clips. Keep in mind, though, that we do have some people joining us via dial-up, so clips are probably more convenient for them than trying to download the entire audio. Personally, I'm borderline savvy about such things (I can possibly do it, but am too busy/impatient to figure it out), but then FSF so kindly made her offer; it's easier to her. Besides, then it gets posted on the board for everyone who didn't know they wanted it until they saw it. If that makes any sense.
FSF, what is your opinion? Are MP3 requests a burden?
And kry, you're correct - audio without video, video without audio - they're both strange (watch a rock musician in concert without the sound sometime - all that jumping around looks odd when you can't hear the music). In movies and television, the two work together too well to separate them.

BudMad, I thank you for this it makes perfect sense!

I couldn't agree more. Sometimes I wish I were able to throw in a line or two - which doesn't originate from Star Trek or The X-Files lol

NO! Absolutely not, just keep 'em coming and I'll do my best to deliver them precisely as ordered.
Sometimes life messes up with my plans though - instead of making "The Jukebox Scene" CN tonight, I tried to help a friend who had troubles with her mailclient - so no new CN until tomorrow

You're welcome. Glad I could help.
Frankly, I don't get to discuss Shakespeare near as much as I'd like (my dad is the only IRL person I know with an interest in the Bard, but even he doesn't know enough to really "discuss" with), so when I get a chance, I enjoy it.

Judging by conversations that involve my sister and myself, there's a Friends quote for every occasion! I have a poster on my office wall that I purchased at The Globe - it's titled "Quoting Shakespeare" and reprints an article/column written by Bernard Levin. In it, he throws together a lot of phrases that have entered everyday usage, pointing out that they can all be found in Shakespeare. So people quote Will more often than they think!

I understand completely. I've lost count of the times I thought I'd go home and do such-and-such, only to be suckered into going to my parents' house for dinner... Next thing I know, I'm in the hot tub or watching a movie and don't get home until it's time to go to bed.
No hurry. I'm sure the CN will be met with great appreciation when you get to it.

How 'bout a CN instead of just small audio clips? I'll add it to my list of future CNs, which now looks like this: "The Jukebox Scene", "Evey & The Bishop" and "V at Creedy's House".
