Re: Retitled: Identity, actor and mask
quote: meanwhile, 'function' means both 'work, purpose' , which you are using, and 'the graph or trajectory of a set of plug-in instructions', ie, a line, parabola, hyperbola etc from algebra, which i was following.

Re: Retitled: Identity, actor and mask
*bump*
only two years and two months later...
I was thinking about a theological underpinning of V and the Matrix movies here at the end of the Erotic Dynamics and really ran into an impasse on the son/father issue.
The claim that “Who? Who is but the form, following the function of what, and WHAT I am is a man in a mask,” if predicated of the trinity, is exactly Sabellianism, or modalism. That is, there is one being, who takes the roles of the persons depending on what he is doing.
That's an antique heresy related to 4th century arguments about the Trinity. But it solves the problem of V's filiation, or derivation: he is unbegotten [has no father, as all the other heroes in our favorite stories do], because Son and Father - and Ghost, which Dominic says he is like - are faces, or masks, of one being.
I don't think I'm stretching too far; the line is riddling, as is the act of writing it, and asks a symbolic answer. Of course, I mean that it is 'true' in the theological track of interpretation, which cannot be conclusive, and is carefully contradicted, thwarted, and undercut.
*Movie people - are you still there? - have I got to the kernel of your secrets yet? *

Re: Retitled: Identity, actor and mask
I think maybe V was trying to shake the people out of apathy.
