Pequin
Pequin - n. a hot chile pepper, often 7-8 times hotter than jalapeños on the Scoville scale, that is commonly used as a spice. Flavor is described as citrusy, smoky, and nutty. (courtesy of Wikipedia)
Pequin.org - n. a "side-project hobby thing" website run by my counterpart at work (Steven Coy, the other editor) that is looking for submissions of short writing and/or photography. When I asked him why "pequin," he replied, "pequin chiles are the smallest and hottest, like our stories!"

We're basically looking for anything that carries with it something more than the photo itself -- I hate to say photos that are "meaningful" because that's pretentious and what does that mean anyway? Take a look at the photos we've used so far. Usually they are ambiguous and unusual. We don't necessarily try to relate the photo directly to the text (although sometimes a text is written specifically FOR a photo, like Magnifico on the current index), and sometimes not at all. The photo should make one think, and should stay with the viewer, just like the text.
Also, on the technical side, horizontal/landscape shots are better than vertical/portrait shots.
And we're not interested in shots with people, unless they're ambiguous or abstract, like this one.
It's really hard to say, though, what "kind of photos" we're after, because there may be a photo that is vertical, has a person in it, and is totally perfect for pequin. So I try not to specify too much. The best way is to submit (700 pixels wide, send to [the submissions email]) and see what happens. Feel free to submit as many as you like, and as many at a time (even though it says one at a time) because photos are easier to review than texts.
I thought some of our literary Vixens might get a kick out of submitting something. After all, hitting a goal like exactly 1000 words can be an interesting challenge.
Writer/photographer of course retains copyright on his/her submissions.

Re: Pequin
cool!!!
>sigh< last summer, I was writing every day. ah, the former life of leisure! But, I was certainly financially challenged.
How to make time for writing?
For now, I will browse the tiny hot pepper for inspiration!
