homage: A poetry challenge
*wanders into the Viction board*
*wipes an inch of dust off the desks*
Yeah. We need some action around here. I propose a challenge. One of my favorite poems I had to read whilst getting my degree is "homage to my hips" by Lucille Clifton. I'm always trying to refer to it, and being unable to remember it well enough to quote, so I finally did some googling, and found it.
"homage to my hips"
by Lucille Clifton
these hips are big hips
they need space to
move around in.
they do not fit into little
petty places, these hips
are free hips.
they don't like to be held back.
these hips have never been enslaved,
they go where they want to go
they do what they want to do.
these hips are mighty hips.
these hips are magic hips.
i have known them
to put a spell on a man and
spin him like a top!
You might think of it as a reminder that curves are sexy and stick figures aren't as interesting...
After reading the poem again today, I thought it might make an interesting writing assignment for any interested parties.
The challenge: Big hips might be considered an undesirable trait by some people, but Clifton makes hers a source of her personal power - something to be proud of, something sexy. So the challenge is to write a similar poem about one of your body parts or traits - especially if it's one you always wish were different (find the positive in it!). Whatcha think?
To kick things off and because I'm punchy, here's a quick, stupid parody:
"dedication to my daggers"
by V
these daggers are long daggers
they need space to
move around in.
they do not fit into little
petty places, these daggers
are fierce daggers.
they don't like to be held back.
these daggers have never been enslaved,
they go where they want to go
they do what they want to do.
these daggers are mighty daggers.
these daggers are magic daggers.
i have known them
to put a spell on a Vixen and
spin her like a top!
...of course, you'd probably want to change more of Clifton's words, but hey - I said it was stupid!
I'll check back and hopefully contribute a better homage of my own.
