BookCrossing.com
http://www.bookcrossing.com/
I heard of this site (I think in the newspaper) a few years ago, then forgot about it, then just now thought of it and found it again! Was that sentence convoluted enough for you?
I've never done this, but it sounds like a fun and interesting idea! (and a novel way to pass the word on books you love) The idea is, you register a book at the site, and they give you a tracking number. Then you release the book into the wild - leave it at a coffee shop, loan it to a friend, leave it on the bus, donate it, whatever. The person who picks up the book is supposed to go to the site and leave an entry, and you get to track all the places your books travels.
You can even "hunt" for books - people leave descriptions of where they released a book in your area, and you can go find it.
Etc.
Check it out. It's international.
EDIT: Someone released a book "around the fastpass ticket area for haunted mansion" at Disneyland! ... Oh, hey! Someone else released one at my parents' Anaheim time share!

Re: BookCrossing.com
Ahhhhhhhhhh!!! *runs away screaming in terror* I wouldn't dream of parting with any of my books ... EVER (unless of course, I were going to a paperback trade shop). As for the hardcovers and leather bound- forget it.
BUT ... here's an interesting little site (at least for the U.S. and Canada for the time being) where you can track your paper money - which is something that we usually part with on a daily basis anyway. WHERE'S GEORGE??

Re: BookCrossing.com
I read an article about BookCrossing in a newspaper a couple of months ago, but I had forgot all about it. It's a very interesting idea and I hope to find one of the books some day

Re: BookCrossing.com
Hubby and I have been doing this for a few months now. I can see Cyg's point tho, I was loathe to give away any of our books to start with. You've just gotta work on the principle that you will end up receiving as many books as you give away, although this has not been the case for us yet!
Hubby was sat on a train in France about 20 years ago and a man approached him with a really old copy of John Irving's 'The World According to Garp'. He passed it to him and said 'Read this, it will change your life'. We love the idea that someone has been so inspired by a book that you just have to share it, even if with a complete stranger.
In the last two months, we have left books in the supermarket, on a train and at a concert! Hoping to find some soon 'cos our book shelves are staring to look empty!

I do, too ~ at least until they start showing up at your front door pushing their beliefs and pamphlets on you!
Seriously, though, I love it when people purposely leave a book behind for others to enjoy, and I try to do this myself whenever I travel. I don't usually read books when flying (it makes me nauseous) but I'm never without a crossword puzzle magazine ~ ever. So, I'll do my favorite varieties in it and then leave it laying about in a terminal, taxi, or bus. I know others do this too, as I've traded mine for theirs when I've come across them. And just to remove any doubt that the finder of my book can use it, I usually print "For Anyone To Enjoy ~ Pass It On" on the front in large letters. (what a I am...)
I love the money-tracking site, Cyg! Gonna give it a try and see where my money really goes...

I hadn't thought of doing that, great plan - I'm always worried they'll get binned!

Re: BookCrossing.com
Some people on BookCrossing, to solve the issue of not wanting to give away their books (a conundrum to which I can relate!!), buy another copy specifically to pass on.
