Nooooo...this book is not that complicated. In fact the discussion boards here have shown a lot more insight!
I'm really delayed in reading this book, because I have some deadlines to meet, so I only get a few peeks now and then. Right now I'm up to a chapter on the art of the Shadow Gallery, but I think Bohwea's discussion was much more elucidating.

The professor spends quite some time analyzing Waterhouse's painting "The Lady of Shallot" and he is comparing V's cloistered life in the Shadow Gallery to that of the Lady. She spends her life weaving (no pun intended) this tapestry, locked away in a tower. She can see the human activity outside only by looking into a mirror and seeing a reflection of real life. One day the handsome Sir Lancelot rides by and she turns to look directly at him, which activates a curse and leads to her slow death. She outfits a boat and sails down the river to Camelot, which is what we are seeing in the painting. By the time she arrives, she's dead, and when Lancelot sees her, he remarks how beautiful she is, but he's unaware of how he's caused her death.

I guess the analogy is to V's life seen through the distored mirror of his need for vengence. He lives in the world, and has tremendous influence over it, but is not really a part of it. In a way, falling in love with Evey is the start of his (personal) undoing. For without seeing himself through her eyes as a monster, he probably never would feel the need to kill himself (by proxy.) And Evey is made aware of how much a few harsh words spoken to V have had on his life but it's too late of course to save him.

The moral of the Lady of Shallot is that it is better to live a full life, however short, than a long but partial life in the shadows. The analogy is not only to V, but also to his muse Valerie, who feels that it is more important to live her life with integrity, love, and roses than to play it safe.

Also I guess that V's dance with Evey, however brief, which he savors to the fullest, knowing full well that he has only moments to live, is a symbolic of a human being's needed for "romance" in all of it's connotations. Perhaps graphic novel V was a little more explicit on this point; I think he say's something like.."Ah, romance, always romance..."

Well, f4e, that might actually be easier than guessing at what Prof. Keller really means! emoticon

General observation: If you've never heard Loreena McKennitt's performance of this poem, you really should!

In the meantime, back to The Book of V...
