Myths and Stories
Is it time for a thread about mythic and literary resonance? Somehow I am far from tired from thinking about V4V.
So here goes the opening volley: Persephone & Hades.
I've been thinking about this one for a while, but here I am in the wee hours, awakened by the Dark Angel, hovering in my consciousness -- in the form of one of my favorite songs:
quote: Demeter's Daughter
Anne Lister
While picking flowers in the field
all in the springtime of the year,
I heard the sound of chariot wheels
and was afraid with nothing to fear.
And there he stood with his eyes like fire,
His face as dark as a night in hell,
And there he stood with his eyes like fire,
and said, "Fair Lady, I wish you well."
They say he forced me but that's not so --
Of my free will I followed him down
to his dark place beneath the hill,
to his dark palace below the ground.
And there he loved me and I loved him
though all the world there was icy dark
We never noticed the light was dim
for the bright flame inside our hearts.
They say above us the world grew cold,
the leaves and flowers began to die.
The fruit trees withered and grew old,
and dark'ning clouds covered all the sky.
My mother searched hard and tried to find
a pathway leading down from the sun,
and long she travelled with troubled mind
until she walked where we once had run.
I still remember the dreadful hour
she stood before us and bade me leave
Her dress of sunlight, her face a flower,
his face behind me so full of grief.
We made a bargain and made it sure,
we made a contract and made it sound --
that I would stay with her for half the year,
the other half come below the ground.
It was so good at first to see the sky,
to walk in sunlight and hear the lark;
but not so good to have to say goodbye
to my love down there in the dark.
Oh yes, it's true then that life is good,
and I've learned the lesson it can teach:
that you can never have all you want,
and you never want what's within reach.
The sweetest flower that ever bloomed
grows far deep inside a bush of thorns
And happiness then is like the rose,
for without pain nothing good is born.
To know the daylight you must know dark,
to know the flowers you must know weeds;
you cannot meet again unless you part,
or eat a pomegranate without seeds.
there he is! the terrorist! "his eyes like fire, saying Fair Ladye I wish You Well" (what a gentleman. ahem. abductor. hmmm) I love this phrase:
"Of my free will I followed him down
to his dark place beneath the hill,
to his dark palace below the ground..."
Wait , we are..? in the Shadow Gallery! our home.

my favorite version of song comes from this Bright Angel in my life, Grace Griffiths, from her album Grace. All her disks are wonderful; check her out!

Re: Myths and Stories
Is there some sort of audio clip on the site to listen to? I'm having a hard time finding this album from the link for some reason. It looks like a great song, but I can't find it (probably chompin' on stupid pills LOL).
Thanks for sharing.

Re: Myths and Stories
I love Lorenna - the first major recording artist I ever heard who sang beautiful witchy songs.
I heard Grace sing once at a solstice event some years ago, when Iwas living in soul-less suburbia and missed my wild woods of upstate NY. She sang about the Green Altars Deep in the Moss, and stole my heart. I bought her cd and played it when I missed the wild woods of (former) home. years later, i , led by magic, found a house on the internet and shocked everyone by selling my city home and moving out to 5 acres in the swamp forest, my realtor was mentioning neighbors I should meet. "You must meet our Gracie, resident singing angel." Turns out, she is one and the same, and she grew up in these woods.
so for thise years I was pining (pun invoked) for more trees and the song of owls, while trying to live in Washington DC, Grace was singin me home.
The goddess is alive and magic is afoot!

Re: Myths and Stories
Ironically enough, I'm listening to Loreena McKennit's "Night Ride Across the Caucasus" as I read this thread. There's a little coincidence...!

YES!!!! It's absolutely wonderful! I thought of that song when I saw the "Lady of Shalott" painting.
I think you can download it from iTunes. A clip can be heard here off her album, "The Visit."
The Visit
It's a downloadable mp3 clip. The quality isn't that good for the clip, but on the CD the quality of the entire song is excellent! So, don't be worried about the 'fuzziness' you hear on the clip. It's not like that at all on the CD.

Re: Myths and Stories
speaking of persephone & hades,
about the only reason I wouldnt completely give myself over to the V world is that it is so completely shadowy, so devoid of sunshine and birds and happy blooming gardens.
but, it is possible to merge the worlds -- I am sitting on my deck while birds sing and bees hum, and puffy clouds float by, working a bit but also wandering around the Shadow Gallery!
"it was so good at first to see the sun, but not so good to have to say goodbye to my love down in the dark..."
Happily, I too dance in both worlds

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I was hoping she had.
Along the same vein, everytime I see that painting I picture Anne walking through the woods reading the poem (opening scene in Anne of Green Gables, for those who have not seen it).

That is one of my favorites! I love that it is used in the movie "Soldier" (with Kurt Russell). You would think it would be incredibly out of place in a movie like that, but it actually works quite well and is one of my favorite scenes. Sometimes I watch the movie just for that scene!
