I saw that version - Kingsley is surprising, but on reflection, I liked it. Imogen Stubbs, Viola, is terrific - watching her walk like a boy sharpens my appreciation for both sexes.

Well, now that I have experienced Richard III, my appreciation for V4V and V himself is that much richer.

Last night's R3 at Washington's Shakespeare Theater starred Wyn Davies in a gritty and mystical production. This is my first experience of the play. Truth be told, I steered away from the 'heavy' Bard plays, exception being Hamlet which I know fairly well. I read Julius Ceasar in HS and was bored by the military and political story, and had a less developed appreciation for and love of language.

This essay, Sympathy for the Devil helped put the Richard story into perspective. This quote in particular could be written for V:
"He is as much a mixture of virtues as sins, and, wicked as he is, he is never entirely unadmirable. And that perhaps is what troubles us most about him: we like ... him—knowing all the while that he is, as he makes no attempt to hide, a monster. But if he is never entirely what he seems, then a monster is never all that he is."

Richard seemed to be masterful at harnessing the naked greed of others to bend them to his will. V seems to have much nobler intentions -- "save the world" vs. "I just want to be king."

It was a fabulous theater experience, and makes me want MORE! fortunately in DC we have
THIS!
