Re: Made of Win

There are a lot of great shots of Obama on the campaign trail at this site. And some of the captions are heart-wrenching. Obama is giving people back their hopes, and inspiring them. Gawd, I hope he wins.

One of my fave shots:

Image
Caption: "Waiting: Obama listens from a back stairwell as he is introduced in Muscatine, Iowa. It was his second or third speech of the day. Unlike many of the politicians I have photographed in the past, I find it is easy to get a photograph of Obama alone. He lets his staff do their jobs and not fuss over him. Nov. 7, 2007."

Image
"Two staffers had just passed this site and done two pull-ups. Not to be outdone, Obama did three with ease, dropped and walked out to make a speech. Missoula, Mont., 4/5/2008." emoticon

ButMad, he's really an interesting guy. I mean, he can't really show just how cool his is until he gets elected because it tends to freak people out. If Bill Clinton was Capt. Kirk, this guy is SPOCK!
He's almost like this ascetic samuri who has to pretend that he's just like ordinary folks in order to fit in (q.v. "Zatoichi, the Blind Swordsman").
We are so screwed up in this country. We're gonna need the best people available to get us out of this mess. (I think Mitt Romney would have been fine also but I suspect that he's an android.)

P.S. The word on the street is that something monumental (and I don't mean good) is going to be revealed about the Bush administration on January 22nd. Normally I would ignore such a nebulous prediction, but 3 people are making the same claim: I think they are Joe Biden, Colin Powell, and Seymore Hirsch. The date is pretty specific and all three mention the same day. It has something to do with former Bush staffers revealing just how truly f****ed up we really are.

I agree, Delia, Obama seems like a really interesting fellow. I don't watch the news, because I just can't; and I haven't been following the debates or anything because I don't need to (I've known who I was voting for for a long time now).

So I haven't seen or heard much of Obama. But what I have seen has impressed the hell out of me. From the tone of Michelle's voice during the DNC biopic that told me "here is a woman who loves her husband", to his slightly awkward, yet very smooth joking at... oh, some dinner he and McCain were at, I forget what it was called (KittyRoomie showed me the vid). And as I said above, I love those photos of him (and the one of his worn-out shoes).

I have hope that I'm actually going to like my 30th birthday present from the American people. emoticon

Dear Flare,
Mitt Romney is the governor of the state of Massachusetts . He is unusual in that his party affiliation is Republican and his religion is Mormon. Massachusetts has traditionally elected Democrats and Catholics (like the Kennedy's, e.g.) Romney was involved in getting the Olympics to come to Salt Lake City. He's a multimillionaire businessman, etc.
It's his appearance that makes me think, Android. He looks like a game show host or a Ken doll. His face shows chiseled perfect features, every hair on his head is always in place, and he is very neat and clean (too clean maybe). But he always has this slightly vacant look on his face as if he is taking orders from a master computer somewhere.

Dear ButMad,
I now have a lot of respect for Mr. Obama, but at first I didn't think he had "the right stuff." He seemed glib and very vague about his reasons for wanting to be president. ("With my background I think I can bring people together...".) Yeah, I thought, he looks good in a suit, but so what? The last year has shown me what he's made of, though. And although I kid about his superhuman powers, I really don't expect very much from the next administration. He is going to be faced with en enormous mess. If this country is still standing, without a major terrorist attack (e.g. a dirty bomb), and we haven't fallen into a global depression, then I would say that he has done his job well.

Thanks for the explanation, Doctor D emoticon According to Google, you're not the only one thinking of him as an android.

Your "made of win" moment for today:

quote:

George Orwell is banging on the lid of his coffin and screaming, "1984 was a cautionary tale, you dolts, not a motivational speech!"

(Found in someone's sig line on Daily Kos)

I'm sorry, but at this hour, all I can think are nasty comments about his opponent's.... um, equipment.

*looks at photo again* But that might be too generous, as it is.
