Dear Abby is a long-standing newspaper advice column in the US. "Abigail Van Buren" (real name Pauline Phillips) and her twin sister "Ann Landers" (who had her own advice column - I always thought it was cute when they'd include a birthday message to each other in their columns  ) were what the Brits call "agony aunts" - you write in about your problems, they offer advice.
