Re: A little V dalliance
You know, it's stuff like this that make me SOOOOO envious.
I cannot draw a straight line with a ruler.
The ONLY way I can paint pictures is with words.
Oh, I can see it well enough -- I can see it in enough detail to construct a map, usually. I simply can't render it in anything much better than a schoolchild's crayon.
My husband is an artist, and it simply amazes me to watch him work. My best friend is an artist. My mother is an artist. Several of my other best buds are artists.
For me, it's like watching a miracle come to life on the paper before me. It seems so effortless; it just flows from the hand through the tool onto the paper (whether the tool is a brush, a pencil, or a computer mouse seems irrelevant).
My own MOTHER can do this. Where did this talent go? Why can I not do more than crude cartoons?
I bow in awe to your talent, your gift, my dear. It is substantial.

Re: A little V dalliance
Val! Oh lord, I'm so sorry - we posted almost at the same time which is why I didn't see your reply above mine and didn't respond to it, I do hope you didn't think I was ignoring you!
But as for saying you don't have any creative talent, that is something I'd love to challenge. You'll need to get yourself over here and we'll do some painting exercises together. I used to love giving classes to people who were convinced they couldn't draw/paint, (just because they couldn't reproduce an image in a photographic way) as it was always so liberating for them, ANd for me, and I always learnt so much from the people I was teaching!!
If you can paint something that is instantly recognisable, then that is what people will usually say is a good drawing, but in truth art is so much wider and more exciting than that!
Val, you are so creative with your words and verbal images that it's clear you have a lot of imagination and passion, I BET if you were allowed to experiment with art forms - without worrying about making photo-realistic art - you'd create some incredible work!
Maybe you could try that, when there's no one around and you don't feel the pressure of anyone watching or judging you, just get some arty materials that feel right for you (could be oil paints, acrylic paints, oil or chalk pastels, they're all great for that) and just experiment with colour and movement, just to please yourself. It's very cathartic.
And thank you for your very kind words about my work!! Even though those two are so straightforward (not a great deal of imagination employed, lol).
The one I'm working on now is a little bit different though... hurrah! ;)

No prob, Boh, I saw what happened.

*droops head* In all honesty, my dear, I haven't the foggiest notion where to even start. I simply don't know how. I know what I like when I see it, and my taste is NOT all about "realistic" art, but I'm serious when I say I don't know how.
The truly funny thing is that I can create on a FACE all day. I'm considered one of the top special effects makeup artists here in town, for the many different community theatre groups. I can look at a face and know how it's going to age, how to MAKE it look aged, how to make it look beaten up, how to turn it into a clown, how to make it become a nuclear blast victim, etc.
My husband (a theatre and art double major from college days) is one of the other top makeup artists in town. He taught me.
But a blank sheet of paper gets covered with words, not pictures, when I get hold of it. Go figure.
