It's true Vadin, you did create it - and we thank you for that - but we have made it our home and feel comfortable here.
There are of course things that could be better, the search function for example - it's probably the worst search function I've ever seen.
As Vienna, I'd also like to be able to insert emoticons at the point of the cursor - but I've gotten used to writing the code for them instead.
This is the first forum I've joined, so I don't miss the nesting function.
I like how the admins and mods performs their duties - there's not much shouting involved - what a relief!
Oops, it's almost time for the Runboard back-up black hole, I'll better stop 'ing
I'm not privy to what happened before I arrived here. I don't know Vadin or what he/she did for this site. But I can share this ~
I came to this site because I found it interesting. I stayed because these women are wonderfully savvy and V-centric. I don't mind that emoticons are a wee bit odd to insert as they are not what concerns me.
You know what I do like? I like that Leda and others are as persnickety as I am regarding the movie's timeline. I like that we talk about costumes, plot discrepancies and character development. I like that krydiam was generous with his help regarding technical issues that I am clueless about (and still am).
I want to talk about V for Vendetta. I want to dissect this film to it's bare skeletal bones. I want to know why things happened and, consequently, why others did not. I want to talk about the all the components that created this intriguing and riveting film.
These women know this film. They share my passion for it. That is what makes this a great site.

Re: Shadow Forum not moving house
To move or not to move that is the question. I know everyone would go, so talking about V and every little part of him and the movie, graphic novel, merchandise, vids, fanfic etc would continue on any new board. That doesn't concern me. This community would continue wherever we go.
But, if runboard does continue to have problems, then I think it would be wiser to go with a more stable program, and our own web addy is a nice plus. I'm more familiar and comfortable with the phpBB board that Vadin has set up because most of the boards I visit use the same programming. I'm not really fond of the setup of the emoticons here (I think the graphics are ADORALBE and would love them to transfer over wherever we go if it comes to that) but I dislike that the main ones are numbered instead of a word, and they stop moving when I click on one, whether in IE or Firefox. I also dislike that the coding goes to the bottom of the post I'm typing instead if being inserted where I place my cursor. I also hate the timing on this board. I wish there was some sort of feature so I could change it to my time zone.
But, if the consensus is to stay, I'll stay. If it is to go, I'll go. My preference would probably be to move, though (again just because I'm more comfortable wth the program of the forum)

As someone who ran multiple forum programs, I would have to say that perhaps not all members would move. While my personal main concern is content, there is something to be said for design.
If you are looking at licensed programs for your own domain, then you might be looking at significant $$$. If you are looking at member-funded programs such as ezboard, you are looking at headaches as ezboard is one of the most unreliable options available.
It depends on what your objectives are. If you are looking to host a message board on your own domain, then I would strongly suggest a budget review.
If a member finds the actual board software to be a nuisance, then even though the content might still be rich, they will not participate.

Re: Shadow Forum not moving house
The board is already made, and ready to go, as is the domain name taken. You'd have to talk to Vadin about all that.
The main core of people would go. The ones who are the most active. Those are the ones who would keep the community alive and help advertise it to other sites to recruit others. There are many who have dropped off no longer interested and no longer come here.
I've been through a major move as a moderator on another board. It was quite pain-free. The main contributors moved with everyone. We advertised around, and have tracked down almost all members who have, on their own time, rejoined. The board has been up and active since the beginning of this year, and is close to 1000 members now.

Re: Shadow Forum not moving house
For those who don't know, this is the address to the forum we're talking about:
http://lotsg.com
(By the way, it's not a "Sister Forum")
You all can do what you want. I've done my part.
Once again, Leda, ButMad & the rest- Once you join, you'll have the same responsibilities as here.
I'd like to thank everyone for being supportive. I understand your reservations about relocating. I know it sucks to leave a place you've grown up in. I totally aknowledge that it was all of you and your input that made this place what it really is. In that respect you all helped create what we have here. It was an overall group effort, and it's turned into an amazing forum.
There's no reason that can't continue on a better website.
I'm done for awhile.

Re: Shadow Forum not moving house
Thanks, Vadin, for understanding the situation so gracefully.
Hi Sultaness of V-things,
quote: Sultana wrote:

Until we hear from more people we can't yet take that as a given. If the majority of us decide we do want to move, there may yet still be some deep debate as to exactly where, as from the replies so far there already seems to be a variety of preferences.
quote: Sultana wrote:I've been through a major move as a moderator on another board. It was quite pain-free.
So have I, four times: twice as a member and twice as a moderator; and sadly they weren't quite as pain-free as your experience. I think it's more realistic to be prepared for a few bumps, either way.
quote: Gieselle wrote:
Unless asked, I won't say anymore on the subject then ~
Gieselle, please do feel free to speak, at any time! Yours and everyone's opinions are important, so let it out!
ButMad and Vienna, you both like nested messages and I don't at all, so there's a good example of how personal preferences differ when given free choice.
I just like the posts with recent activity to go to the top, et voila.
quote: Vienna7 wrote:
Personally, I'd like to see a board that is more user-friendly (like inserting emoticons at the point of the cursor instead of the bottom on the page).
Yeah I found that a pain in the arse initially, but it's only a couple of colons and a number.
I do prefer html-friendly boards but got used to this one because I like the place itself.
quote: Vienna7 wrote:
If it was up to me, I'd move it to Usenet, except the only problem there is one gets a lot of spam and you can't edit your post (it's also not as "pretty"). But you can killfile people that irritate you (although that's not too much of a problem here) and you can filter immediately responses to your posts instead of trying to remember which thread you posted in or get flooded with e-mails that someone has responded to your post.
So... it's got spam, no post-editing, less attractive, and allows us to ignore people that we probably wouldn't use anyway... and that's an improvement?
This forum isn't so big that we can't do a little tour of the boards over a few days, and find most -if not all- of the replies to our previous posts. And the e-mail notification can be turned off, no?
I personally feel if we were to move somewhere else, and don't think we need to yet, then it would have to be somewhere with everything we already have and more. To not be able to edit posts, and to be in a place that looked (and consequently felt) less 'us' would seem to be a step backwards.
