Re: Secondhand smoke and pets
I don't know what the exact effects are, but they certainly can't be good.

I'm quite sure they will say so.

Re: Secondhand smoke and pets
I picked my cat up in the garden one day years ago and noticed that he smelt of fags! I haven't smoked in front of him since!
I agree with Ms Poptart, It can't be doing them any good, so better not to take the risk.

Re: Secondhand smoke and pets
There's been a public places smoking ban in California for many years. I remember when I moved here 11 years ago, you could still smoke anywhere in Disneyland (but it'd already been banned in restaurants, etc.), and I got tired of having clouds of smoke float over the head of the person in front of me in queue for a ride and smack me in the face. I was soooo happy when they instituted "smoking areas" at DL!
Every time my sister and I go over to Vegas, we'll be standing in line waiting to check into the hotel, suddenly smell smoke, look at each other, and say, "Oh, yeah..." - We're so used to smokeless CA that we forget you can smoke indoors in Nevada - especially in the casinos.
You're right, Tamlin, people have a right to smoke. They also have a right to freedom of religion, and many many other freedoms. And I'm fine with that. But when the expression of those freedoms affects my own well-being? Smoke all you want or pray to whatever god you want, but don't take me down with you.
As far as smoking around animals, I can't imagine smoke or nicotine being good for any living creature.
On a related note, I found this article to be an interesting read. Actually, I've found all of their articles to be interesting. And from the same source, just in case anyone's interested in an.... "alternative" stop smoking method: click here

That law has actually been passed in the state of LA.
Speaking of public smoking bans, restaurant owners here are losing LOADS of business due to our new statewide ban. A few have had to close their doors. They owners who have not been forced out of business are *screaming* about the ban, and begging the state to allow for smoking sections - but nobody is listening.
Edit: Tam - while cigarette smoke obviously doesn't bother me, as I am a smoker - a large number of perfumes and colognes do. Those nasty little culprits have sent me into frightening asthma attacks well before I even began smoking. Certainly, I can't be the only person on the entire planet that fragrance has this effect on. While I realize that everyone desires to walk around with a good, clean fresh scent - I don't think many people are aware of the potentially DANGEROUS health effects it has on people like myself and others. As asthma is a quite common affliction - why aren't we screaming about public bans on chemical fragrances? Perfumes made strictly from natural botanical oils would enable us to walk around without gasping for air.

Re: Secondhand smoke and pets
No, Cyg, it's not just you. Most perfumes make me gag, too. Which is why I use essential oils instead. They last longer, and don't smell as strong.
I'm allergic to cigarette smoke, and I'm an asthmatic...So I have a double whammy.
