Re: Mini-UN-rants!
Okay, so here's something weird...
My dad, retired, has a new obsession: Internet chess. He plays several games a day against opponents around the world.
Yesterday, Mom calls me while the Spice and I were standing in an LAX queue, waiting to get Leda checked in for her flight back to London.
Mom: You're never going to believe it!
Me: What?
Mom: Your dad was playing chess today with a guy who lives in London and works for a publishing company!
Me (half-joking): Are they hiring?!
Mom: I told him to ask, and he said he'd already talked to the guy about it.
(GO, DAD! )
So when I had a minute later, I called Dad. He said the guy works in advertising for a publishing company that does a lot of publications/reports for company-to-company communication, and was impressed that I already had experience dealing with such reports from a couple jobs ago (when I worked for the geotechnical engineering firm). He also asked Dad, "Really? She likes the UK that much, that she'd be willing to move?" Dad: "In a flash!" (This bloke, FWIW, was born in London, but his parents are from Bangladesh.)
Dad sent me the guy's email address and the company's website, and I'm apparently to send the bloke my CV, and he'll pass it on to HR at the company!

I told Dad he had my permission to tell Mom not to yell at him anymore about playing chess online.

No guarantees, but if nothing else, it's a contact within the industry, IN the country I want to be in! It's a start.
I've decided what I'm going to do is: tonight, I'm going to make some Leda-suggested edits to my CV, to (hopefully) get it closer to the UK style. Then I'm going to (do something I should have done months ago:) send it to Mark with an urgent request that he spend 5-10 minutes casting an eye over it as a UK employer (which he is), and send back any suggested improvements. Regardless of whether he gets back to me or not, I'll send it to the publishing guy tomorrow night, so it's in his Inbox for the UK Tuesday morning.
That way, I get input from a UK employer (hopefully) and it doesn't get lost in Publishing-Bloke's Monday morning shuffle (we all have one).

Predictable, and also good about participating in things like that. (And, for the record, my sister replied, which I didn't think she would.)

And a good start, I'd say
