The first computer-hack known to have inflicted physical harm

I am so angry about this, it makes me feel ill.

http://www.epilepsyfoundation.org/aboutus/pressroom/action_against_hackers.cfm

Someone or someones hacked the Epilepsy Foundation's site to have flashing images appear. Then the hack was updated to include Javascript that, when clicked upon, caused either flashing lights or patterns that could induce seizure.

I'm not a photosensitive epileptic, but so many people with seizure disorders do have those sensitivities. There were indeed seizures reported as a result of this hack - and, of course, that's only the ones that have been actually reported!

Seizures are serious things. Most often, they don't have long-term harmful effects, but some do - and in rare cases, seizures can cause strokes or even kill someone.

I hope that these people who did this hack are found and prosecuted. I don't have words to adequately describe how downright evil these people are! Especially if they thought this was just funny. emoticon

I'm off to take my own seizure medication and pray for some justice to be done here.... emoticon

Yup, my thoughts exactly, ButMad.

I still wonder, what's the motive here? It seems to be above a bunch of boys having fun wreaking havoc - why would they prey on people with epilepsy? It makes no sense. emoticon

Why?

Because:

1) They're cowardly little ****s who think they can get away with it.

2) They're bored little ****s with nothing better to do.

3) They're craven little ****s looking for people who are "weaker" than they are to beat up on.

4) They're evil little ****s who did it just to see if they could and because they thought it was "funny'.

5) They're unmonitored little ****s whose parents think it's okay to let the internet babysit their children because normal parenting is too "restrictive" of their children's right to "self expression". emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

6) They're soulless little ****s who caved to a dare by their friends.

7) They're unimaginative little ****s, who -- instead of channeling their time and talents into positive actions -- chose the easy way out of attacking rather than creating.

8) They're vindictive little ****s who, for reasons heretfore unknown, don't like epileptics.

9) They're clueless little ****s who thought that a stunt like this might raise "awareness" about epilepsy.

But any way you slice it, they're little ****s.

Thus spake the MelindaKitty

And thus spake the MelindaKitty wisely. emoticon I have a strong feeling you're right in everything you say! I more go for the "bullies preying on the weak" thing than trying to raise awareness of epilepsy, though.

I would never wish a seizure disorder on anyone - trust me on this - but for little ****s like this I'm so very tempted. emoticon

Re: The first computer-hack known to have inflicted physical harm

I literally had a stomachache over this last night, evilpop. After all I've been through with seizure, this kind of thing hits me hard.

My neurologist, whom I saw today, hadn't heard of it yet - he says it's a very small percentage (3 to 5 percent) of people with epilepsy that have photosensitive epilepsy, but he could believe that there had been seizures as a result of that hack. I said, I hope the hackers were novices enough that they can be caught. This doctor is very calm and doesn't show strong emotion, not that he would in front of a patient anyway, but I can tell that this story didn't make him happy at all! emoticon

I agree with MelindaKitty's characterization of these lowlifes as little ****s, but their act of vandalism goes further than just a "prank,." "stunt" or "hacking."
From a psychological profile, this ranks up there with the sick individuals who put razor blades in apples on Halloween and cyanide in capsules of Tylenol. Both of these acts of cruelty resulted in changes in behavior in the population as a whole; Halloween is hardly observed in some communities these days and we now have all sorts of protective packaging on medicines and other edibles.
It's odd that the news media hasn't really picked up on this story, as they did with other acts of random cruelty!
The Tylenol poisonings (and there were only a few) created a national panic. Maybe if everyone knew about this story someone will have remembered hearing these creeps boast about their dirty deed and will report them to the authorities.

P.S. Hugo Weaving has been reported to have photo-sensitive epilepsy. I think there was a report of him having a seizure on stage during a performance when a strobe light was used.
***Double the reasons for outrage!!!*** emoticon Grrrrrrrrr!!!
