Re: The first computer-hack known to have inflicted physical harm

Wow, I completely forgot that about Hugo Weaving. I read as well that he has photo-sensitive epilepsy and seized on stage at one point. He's part of the 3% of people with epilepsy who have it...how sad is that?? emoticon

You're very right, Dr. Delia, this is more than a prank. I wondered why it was making me feel so ill...the Tylenol poisonings in 1982 sent *me*, my 12-year old self, into a panic as well. I think it was part of the "end of the innocence" for me.

I'll admit, it still frustrates me that they never cracked that "cold case." If anything positive came of it (which is a stretch, I know), McNeil responded quickly and showed everyone how to tamper-proof packages. But I'm old enough to remember when tamper-proofing wasn't necessary! Now it can sometimes cause *more* of a headache opening a package of painkillers...but still, given what happened, the protection is worth it. (I wonder how many younger people know why tamper-proof packaging is now the new normal? They never knew the old normal...)

I wish they would publicize this more, too. I fear that this is going to turn into another unsolved cold-case. People like this *do* tend to boast about what they did, so if there's more media attention - it's more likely to be cracked.

Oh. So that's why there's so much involved in getting to one's meds. (I was 3 in '82.) Thanks for the info!

I suppose it's like anything else - it doesn't occur to you that such measures might be necessary until some evil person shows that they are. Remember how lackadaisical airport security was eight years ago?

That's true, ButMad, if you were three at the time you had no awareness or a vague awareness of the Tylenol poisonings. There were some copycat poisonings right afterwards, but given how quickly the makers of Tylenol and then the rest of the drug companies jumped on the problem, the damage was a lot less than it could have been. I think the initial problem was localized to Chicago; actually I think the most publicized copycat was in the Chicago area too. One poisoning of a lesser known product ended that product line, but J&J saved Tylenol.

Wikipedia has an article on it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tylenol_poisonings

The sick part? The first victim was a 12-year old girl. I knew that, but it took the Wiki article to remind me of the other details. Two other people, husband and wife, died while gathering to mourn the second victim, who died shortly after the 12-year old - the couple took pills from the same bottle the second victim had used. I think there were seven victims in all, and two other tampered bottles were found that hadn't been bought yet.

Johnson and Johnson saved their brand only by their quick response - and ultimately, the gelcap seems to have saved the brand. (I take Tylenol for pain control, within reasonable doses, every day without fear, on account of the gelcap's existence!)

I can only think that the sabatouer wanted to hurt J&J...but the actual motive, and more importantly, who did it, were never found!

I just don't want this hacking of the epilepsy site to turn into the never-solved case that the Tylenol poisonings turned out to be!! emoticon

Oh, I forgot - and DO I remember how lax airport security used to be pre-9/11. I hate to say it, but based on the lack of security, 9/11/01 was a situation just waiting to happen! But that's another thread entirely...

Do you have a link to proof of that? Just wondering.

Because wikipedia is always accurate... ._.
Actually, two people did that.
Not all of anonymous.
Again, please, do not blame a whole group of people for what a few morons and assholes have done.

I think it's also worth pointing out that as a group name, "Anonymous" was a poor choice.

Because when an action is performed by an anonymous person(s), is it an anonymous person, or an Anonymous person?

Know what I mean?
