Gordon

Is anyone with me on really liking Gordon's character and feeling very sorry for him? Poor dude had to live without love all his life becuase he would have wound up in a detention center. So he created a false persona for the world and became famous. He finally reveals himself to Evey and that scene in his shadow gallery makes me want to cry. Then the poor guy totally underestimates the reaction to his making fun of the chancellor in his show and ends up dying. So sad. emoticon

Yeeaaaah. Gordon Dietrich (film version) is just a big ol' teddy bear. A real sweetheart.

Art imitates life. I read at Wikipedia that Stephen Fry had a similar life to his character Gordon. He was celibate for 16 years before finally coming out as a gay man.
I often think of that when I see him read those lines in the film.

I love Gordon, and am grateful for the wonderful gay character, although, like so many queers he ends up dead. >sigh<

But, I have come to believe that he madea calculated sacrifice, similar to V's, by using his power as a communicator to speak truth to power. At first I thought of him as failed, a victim of the regime who tried to use the indirect vehicle of communication, as opposed to the direct action of V's violent vengeance. But now I feel that both men used their gifts to bring down the corrupt leaders. That TV show did so much to undermine Sutler, everyone was laughing at him, and they were loosened up from their fear by this, and it made it possible for them to take the V masks delivered to their door, and take to the streets. During Sutler's speech, no one was watching their TV.

For more Gordon, read Leda's fanfic Overture and its prelude, The Illusion of Coincidence.

Re: Gordon

I love Gordon. When I watched the movie for the first time, I knew as soon as I saw him put on his non-censor approved show that it was the end of the line for him. It was hard to watch him get arrested, and you cannot help but feel for the man, for he really was a hero in his own way. V gave him the courage and strengh to act for what he believed in, and you have to admire him for that.

I prefer the movie Gordon as opposed to the GN persona. I don't know, GN Gordon just didn't do it for me as a character. It was great and all that he took Evey in after her little misadventure with V, but I was glad to see him out of the way for then I knew that somehow she would get involved someway with V again. I read the GN before the movie came out, and I knew that Gordon had to die. However, the changes they made to his character of who he is, that his whole life was suffered with a secret that would get him black-bagged, and that he was portrayed as a pretty decent guy, made me not want to see him go.

AND... the man has a wine cellar. How can you not like someone with a wine cellar? emoticon

Re: Gordon

I was just wondering, as far as the movie-verse:

That coincidence-that-isn't, between V and Gordon? What are your thoughts on it? As far as the same greeting for Evey that they have, of the "Bonjour, Madamoiselle!" and the eggy-in-the-basket?

What I think is that V and Gordon were/are brothers. Gordon said that his mother used to cook that for him, right?

Also, V and Gordon had to have been in some correspondence for V to be aware when Creedy's men were raiding his house?

Anyways, that's my personal theory. Just wondering what you all thought. emoticon
