Re: Would you have another actor play V? if so who???
Kevin McKidd
(If you've seen the TV series Rome he's the main character, Lucius Vorenus)
Here's some info on him:
http://imdb.com/name/nm0571727/
He has an amazing voice, and I think he probably could have done V quite nicely, now that I think about it.

Re: Would you have another actor play V? if so who???
I'm going to revive this thread, because I've seen someone else who, in a far-away alternative dimension where His Hugoness was never born, would have made an admirable V: Nathaniel Parker
He's got many of the qualifying attributes, plus - and this is the star quality on his CV - he's got a really deep and lusciously posh voice. Oh, and he's also performed plenty of Shakespeare, both on screen and on stage, so he's at least some way ahead of the competition. Oh, and he looks scrumptious in black. Observe...

Re: Would you have another actor play V? if so who???
You know, I've been thinking about this and I'm not entirely sure on who I would pick to play V other than Hugo. I agree with the whole Alan Rickman voice thing (that man's voice just makes me melt... *sigh* ), but if Alan were to play V, he'd have to be 10 years younger. Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves age is good.
The only other actor that popped into my mind is Liam Neeson. There was a discussion going on on a Phantom of the Opera message board and someone suggested that they thought Liam would make a good Phantom. I remembered this and after playing with the thought, I think he wouldn't make a bad V. His voice is nice - it has that deep tone to it - and he is a very competent actor, IMHO.

I agree! He looks very delicious indeed.

Re: Would you have another actor play V? if so who???
In all honesty, I cannot think of another actor who has the complete package required to play V with that level of sophistication. It isn't a question of "if I couldn't have Hugo" (uhm...that didn't sound quite right... *blush*). It's more a question of not being able to think of anyone else up to the complete challenge.

Now there's coincidence. Only the other day I was rewatching my DVDs of "American Gothic", which is where I first encountered Jake! Of course, he was a lot younger then: See here.
Actually, I don't know about "not handsome". He has sweet puppy eyes, and that voice...very soothing. There's more to handsome than convention dictates.
If you disagree, I invite you to consider why we're on this board in the first place

Re: Would you have another actor play V? if so who???
Gee, I haven't thought about this for a while. How about Daniel Day Lewis? I know he wouldn't go for this sort of thing, but he's tall, lithe, extemely physical and a great actor. Behind the mask, I'd probably have no idea who he was. But this I know, he'd be sexy as hell, crazy as hell, and scary as hell!
Maybe that's the only critism I'd have for Hugo's V. He's not really all that scary. A little menacing perhaps, but at no point did I ever think that he'd seriously hurt Evey. GN V on the other hand, there's a real element of danger there.
I think one critic for Time magazine said that in making cinematic V lose some of his badness, he lost some of his greatness.

Re: Would you have another actor play V? if so who???
Ho, Dr D, I'll take that on!
I'm no particular fan of V/Gn. I agree that one of the striking aspects of V/HW is that no educated woman, perhaps no woman at all, can be afraid of him. But his obvious and irrationally absolute trustworthyness is as mysterious and original as his incontestable erotic attraction.
Greatness is a questionable quality- we attach it to those who make a big change in the world, like Charles Martel or Ivan Romanoff- -or, archtypally, Alexander of Macedon. A pestilent crew, up close, in my book.
V4V presents, not a great man, but a man fully extended in his actions, who does a great thing with the modes and means of his profession - theater.
V/GN is not an actor - that is HW's contribution IIrc. He is principally a hacker before that. Perhaps such a man can be great, in the broadest sense, but he seems to me crabbed and bitter - lacking the extravagant chivalry and endearing daftness we have come to love.
Work with play the happy differentiation! - between the TRUE V and some Ur-source material!
