Confession Time!
I know that to keep within the true story of the GN and film, V should never ever take his mask off. It just would have spoiled things.
Yet... is there anyone here who wishes they could glimpse underneath?
If on the dvd there was an extra scene with him removing his mask - would you want to see it??
(And could he ever live up to our expetations? eek)

Re: Confession Time!
No, I don't think I would have liked that; superficially because, let's be honest here, he's going to look pretty grotesque beneath, and besides, my imagination is warped enough to fill in the gaps!
Less superficially, because the whole point is that V isn't just one man. That's something he knew he had to sacrifice in order to turn the whole world around, and why he knew his love for Evey was doomed. What he gave her was worth far more than hearts and flowers.
Anyway, that mask isn't unattractive in the least

Re: Confession Time!
Good point.
But, it's worth remembering that in the GN he isn't deformed or disfigured at all, he just chooses not to ever be anything but the mask itself and the ideals it represents..

Re: Confession Time!
no i dont want to see beneath, takes the mystery and charm out of it, but while i was watching i wanted so desperately for Evey to see his face, even if we didnt. Just a shot of her reaction, and then she could put the mask back on him. Imagine loving someone and never actually seeing them? but i suppose thats the bittersweet appeal of the relationship.

Re: Confession Time!
I don't think I'd want to see what he looks like under the mask.
For one thing, it kind of defeats all he said to Evey about the flesh under the mask being less of what he is than the muscle or bones, etc. etc.
And also... movie-wise, I might get slightly freaked out by what he looks like... Yeah, not as beautiful a thing to say, but true, and you did want a confession!

Re: Confession Time!
Would I want V to take his mask off? Nope!!! I love the mystery that the mask lends to his personna. As far as the mask itself, I find it to be a pleasing caricature of a very attractive face. (it actually reminds me of someone I know!) I also like the fact that Evey doesn't know what he looks like without it....
Mask = Mystery!

Re: Confession Time!
I don't know! I have mixed feelings about this. Cause as much as I'd like to know what's under the mask (and I would love him no matter what) I enjoy the mystery of what lies beneath the mask.

Re: Confession Time!
Agreed. I'm curious about his appearance under the mask, but the mystery is attractive.

Re: Confession Time!
I want the mask to stay just where it is. Hollywood usually takes things a smidge too far, showing things that are best left unseen. Especially in horror/thriller movies - I think it's far more effective to take things just far enough that your reader/viewer's imagination takes over and freaks them out, doing the work for you. It often turns out to be worse than the one vision a single person puts on page/screen, probably because it's personal to each observer.
(I had that happen with a Val McDermid novel recently - she took the scene to just the right point that my mind jumped ahead and I was dreading turning the page, because I didn't want to read what I was thinking; when I did, it turned out to be the start of the next chapter. She hadn't written that next part, but also didn't need to, because I was there and sufficiently frazzled all on my own.)
In V's case, (1) he's not just one man, (2) his mystique is a large part of his power/attractiveness, and (3) whether he's deformed or not under there, we can decide and decide how much so. He can be as attractive or grotesque as we want.
Besides, anyone who can express himself so eloquently and clearly without needing facial expressions....

Correct. Take "Alien" for example. While the sequels became increasingly lurid, it has to be noted that the original film was careful to show as little of the creature as possible. What we got was a noise here - a hiss, a rattle of breath - or a silhouette there, or merely a character's reaction to seeing the alien. And that is what works best. Too much detail merely leaves the viewer feeling as if they are superfluous to the whole proceeding.
