BUT I can see exactly why they might use a stunt man for the domino scene just from the standpoint of the length of re-setup if something happened and the domino shots got screwed up. (Dear Lord, NOBODY sneeze...)

Wasn't there some story about a hairdresser giving the domino guys a heart attack when she dropped a brush near the dominos while getting Hugo ready for the scene? My memory might be faulty, but...

That aside, I could see them using the stunt guy for that for the same reasons why there are "Unit B" camera crews - not tying up the Names with "trivial" shots. Watch The Mummy really closely some time. When Brendan Fraser is leading his party towards Hammunaptra (sp?), there's this one far shot of the camels passing in front of the setting sun where you see the party in silhouette, and you can TELL that they're stand-ins, because the guy who should be John Hannah? His nose is WAY too small! emoticon It even gets pointed out in one of the three commentaries on the DVD (speaking of, watch the movie with Brendan's commentary - it's hilarious! It's just him, and I swear, it feels like he walked in, plunked himself down on your couch, and is watching the movie with you).

(So why does he get the credit as the "V" store robber? Again, it's a stunt. It involves a firearm.)

Because in that scene, he's not standing in for V. He has a line and is playing his own character - a member of the populace who is using the anonymity of the mask to rob the store.

And I also agree with Ven and Vienna that V is so still because he's awaiting a verdict on the movie from Evey.

That, and then, waiting to see how she'll react to the news of Prothero's death.

I know. What I am saying (and why I suggested the fanfic) is to take the stereotype and go off in a NON-stereotype direction with it.

Huh? How exactly do I do this visually? I was planning on finding an Aunt Jemima pic on the internet and placing V's mask on the face or something similar. Do you think that would be offensive? Any African Americans on this board that can chime in?

Seriously, read peahopeless' fanfic. I think it was "You Broke The Bed" or something like that. It's quite funny. They're giving the Shadow Gallery a good spring cleaning. I'm sure you can have wonderful fun with the imagery. Peahopeless's site

Eureka! I found it! I'll have to read this sometime this weekend.

Re: Hugo weaving behind the mask

Okay, I'm going to do as suggested and try to revive a thread. This is a subject that's always intrigued me as well so a good place to drop in.

I know this is all moldy old news now, but for the sake of needing to find somewhere to jump in, here I go.

There is an interesting interview with HW at the suicide girl's site in which he says that his first few days on set he did the scenes of Evey's interrogations/imprisonment, and the very first scene he did in the V mask and costume is the scene when she is released, the movie's longest and in his opinion most difficult scene, emotionally.

I knew that James P. was a month into shooting before he quit, and have always wondered just how much of him is left in the film.

Here's the interesting point: If Weaving arrived on set and began with the prison sequence(s), Portman's head was already shaved. So...every scene featuring both Evey and V in which she has hair has got to be someone else playing V.

I knew they'd dubbed V's dialog back into the film so the fact it's always HW's voice works. And you can't help notice the different body types/proportions as different people don the V costume throughout. But based on that interview I'm betting on not-Hugo right up to the prison scenes..

Unless Ms. Portman wore a variety of very convincing wigs!? emoticon

It's probably possible to KNOW this if you look harder for more interviews online but, I like the "hmmmm" factor from this one....

Any thoughts?

The only thought I have right now is that Hollywood makeup/costume artists can do amazing things with wigs. emoticon Consider Kirsten Dunst in the Spider-Man films - as I recall, they died her bangs red, but the rest of her blonde hair was tucked under a red wig.

But as I recall, they claimed there wasn't much left in the film of JP's performance... emoticon

Let me percolate.

Edited to add: I'm running through the movie in my head right now... How much do we see of Evey with V before her imprisonment? Fingermen Alley; at the BTN the next day; breakfast; fencing with armor/movie time; offering her help; going after the Bishop... and then she runs, winds up with Gordon, is captured and imprisoned...

Just pondering.

I swear...when I watch this movie I always intend to pay strict attention to Portman's head...but...something always distracts me. emoticon

I'm sure they could have done a very convincing job with wigs, and perhaps they did. Hiding the actor behind that full body costume made it easy for them to edit any bits into a whole and under these particular circumstances, give helpless fans just another bit of minutia to obsess about. :)
