IMO, all it does is spread fear, paranoia, etc., which, in turn, fosters a sense of 'it's us or them.'

Re: Global incident map I remember right after 9/11, my mom kept telling me that she'd heard Disneyland was a high risk target on such-and-such a weekend.
I finally said to her, "Hey, if I get killed in a terrorist attack on Disneyland, at least I'll die while having a great time!"
It's in the same spirit as "don't change your routine, or they win."
(BTW, did you know the air space over Disneyland is a no-fly zone?)
