Thank our troops
Got this from a coworker:
quote: "If you go to this web site, www.letssaythanks.com, you can pick out a thank you card and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier that is currently serving in Iraq. You can't pick out who gets it, but it will go to some member of the armed services. ... It is FREE and it only takes a second. ... Whether you are for or against the war, our guys and gals over there need to know we are behind them..."
My brother-in-law is a Marine, currently in Iraq (but coming home in the next two weeks! ), so I know firsthand the sacrifices involved for these guys who are "just doing their jobs."
I am against the current "war," but I support my brother-in-law doing what he does. Note that he's in Heavy Equipment, not the infantry, and has been involved with recovery work over there, not killing people. But very few of those guys - regardless of their MOS - want to be there, away from their friends and families for so long, etc. - they're not to blame for what's going on, they're just doing their job...
...hate the war, love the troops...

Re: Thank our troops
yap, they don´t really like to be there, I believe.
Because that´s hell, they would be crazy if they
would. I´m from Portugal, but I may send your
troops a message, but it will be: "get out of there!"
Iraq situation is so bad that I will not comment any
further. In the end, It will be a gigantic Vietname.
Glad your relative is coming back, Butmad.

Yes, well, we can discuss the political angles of it on the Politics board. This is just a link to a site where you can have a postcard sent.

Me too. This has been his third tour in the region, this war (he was in the Gulf War in the 1990s, too) - twice to Iraq, once to Afghanistan. He's been overseas 28 months out of the last 44.
And I fully expect him to get sent back again before he retires in 5 years.

Re: Thank our troops
well, we do have some man power there, but they also
don´t get envolved in to direct fight/confrontation.
The situation is similliar, they just wan´t to do their
time and come back. But they can e-mail and
comunicate with their families. USA troops may not
have that luxury, so, yes, an "hang-on" is nice.

My bro-in-law has been lucky this tour - he actually has had access to email and phones. But I know not all of the units have those luxuries all the time. And during the Gulf War, he had random phone access, no email (of course, back then, no one in my family had email at all...).
Sister rolls her eyes when she hears young spouses complain about not receiving an email for a week. She wants to say something like, "Could be worse. Trust me, I know."
Heck, nowadays, they even have a website where you can go write a letter to your spouse, and it gets printed out overseas and delivered to the recipient. Could you imagine having a loved one in WWI or WWII? Nothing but letters that take weeks to get there?

That's back when men were men and women were riveters. They din't have time for silly things like talkin' to each other and communicatin'... There were wars to be won and rivets to be riveted.
Oh- Come on... My beautifully and tastefully arranged assortment of matching smilies are being overrun with a bunch of cheapo facsimilies thereof. Who let those idiots in? The mask was great. The rest. Eh, Not so much. (shades of Jon Stewart there)

Re: Thank our troops
It is good to see how many people are supporting our troops. I wish more people would understand that the men and women over their do not have a choice, and most of them do not agree with this war.
My husband just left Saturday for 7-9 months. It is his second tour over their in a year and a half. I may be going there next year. Life is rough. We have not lived together in over 2 years. Hopefully someday soon this war will be over and our spouses, brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, etc. willl be home for good.
