Hitch****

Or, if you have the filter on: Hitch**** emoticon

Anyway.

Hi, my name is ButMadNNW, and I am a Hitch**** virgin. emoticon Or I was until this past weekend.

Several of the most important people in my life have recently told me how much they like ol' Alfred's films, and all had the same reaction when they'd found out I'd never seen one: emoticonemoticon (Well, all but one, but he has yet to get back to me, so I don't actually know yet what his reaction was.)

So. I decided it was time to fix this defect in my film-viewing history, and KittyRoomie and I are engaged in a Hitch**** film fest.

So far, we've seen Rear Window (Sunday) and Psycho (last night). I blogged about the latter, and intentionally paraphrased Gordon Dietrich. emoticon Next up: Dial M for Murder, followed by Vertigo and North by Northwest.

Re: Hitch****

I loooooove Hitch****, but I didn't really start to appreciate him until I saw his films in the theater. "The Birds" was a staple of late night TV, so by the time I got to my tweens I'd probably seen it several times. Also there was a show called "Alfred Hitch**** Presents" on TV which was probably more like "The Twilight Zone" than like Hitch****'s films.
So when a friend asked me to see a series of 4 Hitch**** films in a series at the Quad Cinema, I was not expecting that much. Boy was I wrong! The four films that they showed were the ones starring Jimmy Stewart:
"Rear Window"
"The Man Who Knew Too Much"
"Vertigo" and
"Rope"
ButMad, if you can catch any of Hitch's films with a live audience, try to see them that way. It's as much about the reactions of the audience as it is about the films themselves. Hitch**** loved to manipulate the emotions of his audiences. The scene in "Rear Window" where Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly realize that Raymond Burr is looking directly at THEM had us jumping under our seats. And this was a pretty jaded New York audience.

Yeah, that's a great moment. emoticon

emoticon Great film! I've never been quite comfortable around crows since! Somehow he manages to imprint that awful bird noise in your brain for life! Everytime I hear that 'caw' now I have to look round and check they're not gathering in great numbers!

Madlings, are you keeping your eyes peeled for Al' in the movies? He often appears in the background, if only for a second or two. emoticon Glad you're finding them interesting. As you said in your blog, he did indeed pave the way for many a director after him.

Surprizing such a well-read [well-viewed?] gal missed the Hitchcoque corpus tlll now. You're in for a good time.
Favorites of mine: Marnie [amateur shrinkery pre-Erickson, post-Freud], The Lady Vanishes [charming hero], The 39 Steps [Donat, who was also Monte Cristo in a film we have come to love...], Rebecca [see it with a friend] and Shadow of a Doubt [set in Santa Rosa] emoticon

No insurrection without resurrection!emoticon, or, Apocatastatis now! emoticon

Re: Hitch****

To date, I've seen:

Rear Window
Psycho
Vertigo
(which mostly just irritated me several times)
Dial M for Murder (oh, and it turns out I lied - I had seen this one before, several years ago)

and

Shadow of a Doubt (largely because Someone told me it was probably his favorite of Hitch's films emoticon - and so far, I completely agree! SoaD was excellent!)

I've been trying to get to North by Northwest for weeks now, and for the past several hours, so I'm going to watch it as soon as I finish this post, regardless of the time (another advantage of being an at-home freelancer).

And F4E - I've not been too successful with Spot Hitch. Until I realized that someone usually lists his cameo in the IMDb Trivia section for that film! emoticon
