Watchmen
Another Alan Moore work has come to the big screen! MelindaKitty and I saw it last night and will be seeing it again next Friday with a larger group.
Discuss. (The movie, not Mel's and my moviegoing! )
I'll be back when I have more time.

Re: Watchmen
Imagine that emote running in circles, flailing its arms, and you have my reaction to Watchmen. I ****in' love it.
I've seen it twice already, a midnight showing, and last Saturday; I might end up seeing it a third time Saturday, in imax.
The midnight showing was great, really fun. The theater I went to has a full service restaurant (in addition to a bar and ice cream bar thingy), so they had a delicious buffet dinner for those seeing the midnight showing...all of the drinks were served in Watchmen cups, and I got a t-shirt...this woman was passing Watchmen shirts out, and they happened to be the girl-cut type...I asked how much they were, and turns out, they were free. Awesome. The last she had was my size. Awesome-er.

I'm quite sure they will say so.

Re: Watchmen
I saw "Watchmen" on opening day with CyranoRox and I hope she will post her opinions here as well.
I guess I'm in the minority, but I was less than bowled over. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the film, but it was somewhat less than the mind-blowing experience that I'd read about.
It IS a very faithful adaptation of the graphic novel by Alan Moore. It IS a very well made movie with good production values. It's beautiful to look at and some scenes are quite moving, especially the opening credits in which we see these tableaux of the original Watchmen or Minutemen or what ever, set to Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are A-changing."
But a lot of the film was...um...kind of "old hat." The CGI was OK but nothing new. Mars could have looked more interesting, for example. And I really couldn't get emotionally involved with any of them. Except, of course, Rorschach. Jackie Earl Haley really hit one out of the park with this role. In mask or out of mask, you could really feel his pain and torment. I mean, if he had been cast as Travis Bickle in "Taxi Driver," he would have bested Robert DeNiro! Perhaps he should have had more screen time. Perhaps in the interest of making a movie more accessible to the general audience, they could have had most of the movie shot from Rorschach's point of view rather than switching back and forth between the POV's of the various Watchmen. In "V4V" The Wachowski's wisely chose to concentrate on the V-Evey relationship and that strategy worked for the film. You only have so much time to get emotionally involved with one or at most three characters, so why not maximize that?
The other actor who deserves kudos is the actress who played Silk Specter I. Also the actor playing the comedian was pretty good. But, the actress who played Silk Specter II was kind of flat. Ditto Night Owl and Veidt.
Now I know that the other roles did not call for such emotional depth, but I don't think they took their roles as seriously as Haley. I saw some of the actors interviewed on talk shows and it was all just a big hoot to them. "Ha, ha, ha, wasn't it silly to be in a superhero movie! Oh, we felt so foolish!" This kind of attitude showed in their performances. If you are doing your best work, you shouldn't feel foolish, no matter what you are asked to do. Did John Hurt feel foolish doing the "Elephant Man" in all that body make-up and prostheses? So why should a superhero movie be any different?
Anyway, maybe I should go out and see it again. There was a lot to digest.

Re: Watchmen
I caught it on a weekday off so hit the first IMAX show of the day hoping to avoid crowds, which I loathe. It annoys me that I feel that way because it's limiting my repeat viewing options! I most definitely will see it again, cuz ...

what she said!
Dr. D. I think you do have some valid points, I also felt a little "huh what?" w/ regard to some casting, most especially Night Owl made me go ???, and agree that Rorschach makes the movie. It might be difficult to find someone who disagrees, there. Well, it's another deeply troubled masked man so there go my legs out from under me, what is it about that anyway? JEH's performance was spectacular and dead on target. I give him

Re: Watchmen
Ever since our first viewing, I've said repeatedly that Rorschach has taken up residence in one of the back rooms of my mind, with all the other damaged un-super antihero superheroes I love (The Shadow, Batman, V, etc.).
There's just something fascinating about him, and he definitely makes the movie. Mel and I already have tickets to San Diego's ComicCon this July, and I've actually been pondering making a Rorschach costume (heck, movie-Rorschach is only 1/2 an inch taller than me! FINALLY! A male character I can dress up as without being ridiculously short!)...
I'd want a mask like this, if I can come up with money and materials: Wow!

Re: Watchmen
I don't know if the mask maker has specified, but the general consensus is that it's heat sensitive paint, yes.
