The Simarillion - Where it all begins
You musssst readsss the Ssssimarillionss, preciousssss. You sssimply musssst!
No really, you should read it. It tells all about the very beginning of Middle Earth and all of its people & creatures. It also tells you exactly WHO Gandalf really is (hint: He's not a wizard. That's just a name the race of men gave him).
Beware: It is, admitedly, a difficult read simply because there is so much information and details, but it is well worth it! The second time you read it it's even better! Really, once you've read it your understanding of the trilogy and all of Tolkien's works becomes much clearer and more enjoyable!
I have provided a link to a site that has a timeline chronology of all of the events and people involved in Tolkien's world that will help any LoTR fan in their understanding. It also has some maps and links to some great artists reditions of Tolkien's characters and places in Middle Earth (Ted Nasmith is my favorite of the three artists. TIP: After you enter his site, click on "Inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien" button in the middle of the left side of the page. When the new page opens, click on the book you want to see pics for at the top of the page).
Here is the link to "A Simarillion Chronology."

Isn't Gandalf one of the Istari? That crossed over the Sea and came to Middle-Earth?

Re: The Simarillion - Where it all begins
Hi Morwen! I see you've done some background reading on LoTR! Yes, Gandalf is one of the Istari, one of the five that came to Middle Earth (ME) from the West. The Istari is an order of the Maiar and he served Manwe and Varda before being sent to ME to help guide and direct the peoples of ME in the right direction (away from Sauron). So, you can see where he got his "powers" from. He's really a spirit who took on the form of an old man during the third age, and he doesn't really age at all. The cool thing is, Gandalf was on ME for awhile before taking on a human form. He just chose not to reveal himself to anyone, he just went around and touched the hearts of people and lifted their spirits. Neat, huh?

Sweet. And isn't he in human form like, 300 hundred-sum years old?
