differences
The little amount I've read in the books I've compared to the movies and I've found a lot of differences. For instance in the fellowship book Frodo has the ring for 30 years before he sets of to Mt. Doom. In the movie it seems like he only had the ring for like a couple months. Another big difference I noticed was the conversation about Gollum between Frodo and Gandalf in the mines of Moria(the movie),in the book they had that conversation in the Shire when Gandalf told Frodo that the ring was indeed the One Ring. List any other major differences in any of the books from the movies you may have noticed.

Re: differences
There's so much that is different it's difficult to list. However, you should look at the reasons why Jackson made those differences. I, too, was mad at first with the differences, but after hearing his comments on them, I understood - except for how he killed off Haldir in the Two Towers. That still irks me.
I'll have to list some differences, and maybe even the reasons PJ gave for making these changes, at a later time. Until then, anyone else want to try to list some?

The shire is bigger than ever
1 big difference is the journey from Hobbiton to Bree. In the book it seemed like they went around a couple corners ran from the nazgul and found the little raft boat thing to bree. But in the books in fact it takes them days to get there-many days! You also get to know a bit about Farmer Maggot and unlike the movie they actually go to Buckland which they don't in the movie.

Re: differences
I think they needed Tom Bombadil and Goldberry in the movie....and in the book TTT they didn't have Warg Riders on the way to Helms Deep. And anyway, Wargs are actually wolves. In TTT the movie, they didn't resemble wolves at all.

Re: differences
You're right Morwen, they were more like hyenas. I didn't like that part either.
Tom and Goldberry would have been an interesting addition to the movie, but where in the world would they have fit it in? It also would have slowed down the movie, since they were working so much on building the tension, fear, and action. Tom definitely would have slowed it down. Also, you'd have to explain how in the world Tom could put on the ring and not be affected by it all - not even become invisible! Not even the books explain that - none of Tolkien's books explain it. Tolkien said he thought there ought to be someone of mystery in the stories. That someone was Tom Bombadil.
I do like how PJ made the Nazgul though. Really eerie and freaky. Love the voices too! Must have been a bugger wearing all those long flowing robes and keeping your face hidden though.

Re: differences
Yeah, I heard they used 50 meters of fabric for each costume. I'm not that disappointed that they left out the Barrow Downs scene though. That one always creeps me out.

Re: differences
They left out Crickhollow and Fatty Bolger entirely. And the bath song is my favorite part!
