Depression Cake
10 Tbsp cocoa
3 c flour
2 c sugar
2 cups sour milk or butter milk
2 t baking soda
2/3 c lard
9x 13 baking pan
Mix all cocoa, flour, and sugar. Place baking soda into milk and stir until you hear a hollow sound and milk starts to spill over the cup. Pour into dry ingredients and mix with spoon. Do not use beater. melt lard and pour into cake mixture. Grease pan and pour cake mixture in pan. Bake at 350 about 40 minutes or until you can touch the center and it will spring back. or test with toothpick.
Frosting:
2 cans sweetened condensed milk 4 squares unsweetened baking chocolate. 2 Tbsp water. slowly heat chocolate and milk in heavy pan stiring constantly until it comes to a boil and thickens. Remove from heat add water, stir and cool to warm and frost cake.
This cake is very rich. You can substitute Cocoa with one cup of apple sauce and add cinnamon nutmeg and ground cloves and you have an apple sauce spice cake.
Or substitute with 3 over ripe crushed bananas and frost last 2 cakes with brown sugar frosting.

Glad to hear it! We need more people like you, with scrumptious recipes.
A "bone" for the PC and Heart-smart crowd would be to serve them food like this with a warning label on each plate!
That Depression Cake recipe sounds wickedly decadent. I can't wait to try some with whole milk (and have a non-filtered cigarette with rich coffee afterward).
More! Give us more!
