Abusable and unnecessary features have been disabled.
My apologies to any innocent persons who might feel a loss or an offence, but I have disabled the “User personalizing (location, avatar, signature)” and “User post count” features, along with the “Who’s Online” display. All of these are abusable, and have been abused as harassment tools by unethical persons, in whichever boards on whichever networks and private servers that allow them.
I have also disabled the abusable and abused “Karma” feature.
While I was at it, I also took down the public display of Board-statistics.
This is now, and will be, a serious place for serious persons, and no serious persons should need or miss the features that I’ve disabled.
The non-serious and unethical persons have no need to be here, and they will not be allowed to harass here, in any preventable or correctable ways, any of the serious persons who use this board.

That doesn't bother me in the least! I'm actually glad that you did this.
Many virtual hugs to you and your family

Like minds think alike, Gronk.
I just said the same thing in other words, to his same post in the "Rules and Policies" forum.

Re: Abusable and unnecessary features have been disabled.
I left that stuff on because this was my first board. I turned off the cheering thing for a while but decided I wasn't going to let jerks force me to turn it off in my own site. Afterwards I just paid no attention to the things.
Maybe I will tinker more now and learn more about the options in sites like this. I should really know how to work a site before starting one I suppose.

Re: Abusable and unnecessary features have been disabled.
I have to admit that it was quite fun at first when someone was hitting the negative karma button, but after a while....
The nest was my first introduction into the world of giving someone points (or taking). It grew tiring quick though.

The trouble with the "Karma points" thing is that anyone's enemies or friends, in one or more aliases each, can visit any particular board once a day in each alias, for the express purpose of "applauding" or "smiting" particular posters.
Runboards itself maintains lists of not only individual board-members, but also Global Users of the entire network, ranking them in order of their "positive" Karma points.
In practice, a User with only a few total posts and no "smites" ranks higher than Users with hundreds or thousands of total posts and even a few "smites".
Hence the ongoing abuse of this feature.
The actual "Karma" figures are meaningless and useless as a true measure of anyone's "popularity," and "popularity" is meaningless and useless as a true measure of anyone's veracity, credibility, influence or significance.
Hugs back,
Joseph

The first thing to decide is whether you want a "highly active," or a "highly significant" forum. You can't have it both ways.
To be "highly active," a board requires lots of members with lots of animosity between them, along with "loose" rules and policies and enforcement thereof (like in the case of Pravda), but this comes at the ultimate cost of a board losing its significance (also like in the case of Pravda). It also comes at the immediate cost of intensive moderation due to numerous complaints from the users.
Once you make this basic decision, then you can put your personal experience to use in deciding which of the available features and options are conducive to the sort of board you want for yourself and your "target" membership as well as your "target" audience (viewership).
With your long experience in forums, and with your final settling of your own principles and ideologies, your next board is bound to be more successful than your first board was, whether you choose to make it a "fun" place or a serious place.
But of course, I hope and expect that you'll also remain a welcome and valuable member of this forum.
Joseph

BTW, the last 7 days averave page views here (including today's partial total) stands at 419.7, which is nearly double the last 30 days average of 241.2 (also including today's partial total of 241 as of 9 AM Pacific Standard time). Not bad for a board with only 13 members thus far, eh?
