Barnabas Delgado, Terran 2nd shift commander (NPC)
Name: Barnabas Delgado
Age: 50s, Terran standard years
Description: Barnabas is a dark, hawk-faced man, tall and lean and with a forbidding stare. He's whipcord strong, with a decisive and well-trained way of moving. He's to the point, often abrupt and doesn't enjoy the political tight spots his position often puts him in.
Friends/Enemies/Relatives: Barnabas is twice divorced, with children he hasn't seen in years. He has a well-treated Darkovan mistress in Thendara and is well respected by her family (a brother and two sisters, parents), with a nedestro child by her. His position doesn't make him popular and he's got enemies among the criminal groups on Darkover and off. In addition, he's alienated the legate with his 'shady loyalties'.
Skills/Strengths/Weaknesses: Delgado is a former Terran marine, with all the skills that implies. He can use most Terran weapons, has a good tactical grasp, can command men and use the strengths and weaknesses of a situation to his advantage. Unlike many Terrans, he can also use a sword - a hobby that's come in very handy. He's not that skilled in cold weather skills but is familiar with the environment in and around Thendara. He can speak Cahuenga but stumbles on Casta's delicate inflections and cannot read the Darkovan script.
History: Barnabas is the swing shift commander of the Terran security forces at Thendara port, a position he's held for four years. It's his shift that gets the brunt of criminal activity between Darkovans and Terrans; curfew violations, smuggling and assaults are the most common thing encountered. His mistress is a merchant's third daughter and he maintains a small apartment for her and his child, he's taken to Darkovan tradition and is allowing her to raise the girl until she's five, at which time he'll enroll her in the Terran school system. Barnabas knows the shift commander of the city guard; Loran Lanart and has even visited his home once or twice. He's not terribly popular with his Terran associates, his friendliness with the natives isn't well looked on and the way Darkovans snub other commanders - preferring a known, personal contact than 'proper procedure' rubs off on Barnabas in a bad way.
