Creating Your Character
Please start the game with only two player characters. Also, in order to spread the role-play opportunities out, don't have both characters in the same family or guild, profession etc (so, if one of your characters is a matrix technician in Comyn Tower, the other cannot also be a member of Comyn Tower). This way, we get a variety of stories and a variety of opportunities to role-play.
It's boring to be the ruler of a domain! Meetings! Marriages! Court! So … all domain heads, head keepers, the Commander of the Thendara Guard, the Governor for the Thendara Spaceport etc. are NPCs. Please, use them gently.
No god-like characters. Also, no anime characters, no vampires, zombies, angels, characters from the Matrix movies, Lord of the Rings and so on. This game is set in MZB's Darkover universe and those are the types of characters and types of stories that are told here.
The chieri are a dying species in this time period and no one can have a full blooded cheiri as a player character. The best you can hope for is a quarter-blood chieri. There area few types of semi- and non- human characters native to Darkover, most are not suitable player characters.
Please, don't use characters from the Darkover books (such as Danilo Syrtis). Create your unique character who lives and breathes on MZBs Darkover.
When creating your character, include the following information.
Name, Age, Description, Laran, Friends/Enemies, Strengths/Skills, Weaknesses/Problems, History, What do you want to do in this game?
Your character should have weaknesses, it's boring to be perfect! What you want to do in the game gives fellow players an idea of how to play best with you. Examples like: adventure plots, explore the Dry Towns, become a student in a tower are all good examples. Become rich, get married, fight battles, are not.
Please read the laran sections - especially the way the family gifts work - if you want to have laran for your character. Only two laran gifts are allowed per character; one is your primary or strongest ability, these second is your secondary or weaker ability. In general, someone who's primary power is telepathy is stronger than someone who's telepathy is secondary; the stronger telepath can (eventually) breach the mental shields of the weaker telepath, project thoughts and so on. Characters with a major family laran are, generally stronger than those who have no special family laran, or a minor family laran. Yes, the Comyn are more powerful, psychically, than those who are not Comyn - they paid for that power with generations of horrible breeding programs. Someone with Alton as primary is stronger than any other telepath except an active Hastur laran.
Your character can have special abilities that are not listed under the families; telekinesis, healing, perfect memory, night vision, are all examples of possible abilities.
It's a good idea to start your character in an area where other players are playing; Thendra city is a good option. If you put your character in the wilds of the Alderan Domain there's no one but you to blame if you're all alone!
