General laran information
About Laran
Laran are the unique powers that some Darkovan natives have, which allow them to survive and thrive in a very harsh environment. During the Time of Chaos and the Hundred Kingdoms era, a eugenics program strengthened the Darkovan laran powers and fixed special aspects of it to certain blood-lines. Over the centuries, the old breeding program was abandoned, the era of the great laran weapons and powers ended and, in the modern day, many towers lie empty and the laran gifts seem to be fading from the Comyn families. Several gifts have been lost, others are spread into the general population.
Disturbingly enough, for the Comyn Council, some Terranans show laran and their ignorance and lack of control makes them dangerous. On the other hand, most Terranans assume the 'laran' of the Comyn is a mythic tool used to keep the lower classes in line.
Laran is a sublet tool and most who posses it don't flaunt it. The vast majority of laran gifted have only minor powers; the ability to read the emotions of those closest to them, perhaps a fragment of uncontrollable foresight and so forth. Only those few who are accepted and trained in the Towers have the kinds of stunningly powerful abilities that can change the course of history, control other people's hearts and minds, draw copper from the heart of the earth and so forth.
Laran first develops for Darkovans in early puberty - it may also be triggered at any age by trauma. Threshold sickness is a sign of laran; teens who show repeated episodes of nausea, migraines, dizziness or nightmares may be developing laran. During threshold sickness, a youngster's laran manifests in unpredictable ways, poltergeist activity, random projections of thought and emotions and similar bizarre effects are fairly common. It's believed that the stronger the laran, the more intense the sickness - some Comyn teens die during threshold sickness if a trained laran monitor isn't there to help them.
For the Game: Assume that any Darkovan has enough laran for telepathic contact (often called rapport by Darkovans) if just one member involved in the encounter has telepathy and the people involved are emotionally close. This is not true of most Terranens - except to the Altons, Terranens are closed to receiving telepathic contact. Though they do broadcast their thoughts/emotions uncontrollably and rudely. So, if one person has 'telepathy' listed on their character sheet, they can enter rapport with a loved one who is Darkovan even if that character doesn't have telepathy. The rapport will be weak and intermittent (unless someone in the group is trained) but it can happen.
