Other Band Gig Reviews
Yeah, this is the place where we (and others) can enthuse about other bands....
Meemies and Soul Inferno qualify as other bands if anyone wants to do any reviews.
Likewise, if anyone outside of The Shine wants to write nice things about us.... Here's the place!!
In the meantime, I make no excuses, I created this so that there would be a "Right Place" to stick my first gig review!
Even if anyone wants to stick reviews of "professional bands" - feel free!
It would be good, however, to focus on unsigned, up and coming or just "flogging the circuit" bands!
Enjoy!

Re: Other Band Gig Reviews
The Shine...Sat 18th March- Finnagans Wake-Edinbugh
Well having seen The Shine a couple of times now, I feel qualified to write a review. The first time was in a small cosy pub and the second in Finnagans with a very large, extremly young packed like sardines, venue.
Plus
The band set up in what could only be said were the most hostile conditions every bit of gear had to be negotiated from front kerb through door and...a hundred excuse me's as it took to wade through the heaving throng (with R), broken glass crunching underfoot and a crowd having spent all day watching rugby, swilling beer, loathed or unable to move a few feet to let them pass.As a result the stage was utter confusion and cables were unravelled with drunks staggering in all direction.Sound check then became a rolling road as it was no time left a quick level and on with the show.
The Shine set off with a very good level despite the above and any set backs did not show as they effortlessly began with the calm assurance that experience only gives you.
Neil..Frontman/vocals /Guitar...guitar sounded crisp and was sweeter than the Burgh (my first experience) he strutted some cool rthymns and his vocals were on the money. The Darkness...I believe in a thing called love...yes Neil you own that note..very few can and do!!.Noticed a huge reaction to his e-bow at sound check and perhaps more would develop a Shine trademark sound? In an Irish bar the sound was famliliar to many and they could have done witha little more. Engaged the crowd as usual in a very relaxed cool way..only ruffle saw the Nasty Neil (quite rightly) when some daft punter jumped against the mic stand raming the sm58 into Neil Knashers......a very quick snarl and all was returned to norm...extremly pro!
Andy...Lead Guitar/ vocals...........what can I say his usual chirpy chops and dramatic runs around the modes.
Nicely timed leads, both in their structure/delivery and length.Brandishing his latest weapon of choice in Bloody Hell Blue...he looked positively in love when he let rip on her..The start of a long and beautiful relationship me thinks! We all know Andy can play but you know...I thought his singing was token until that night...he sang his way through some favourites very competantly..watch this guy he will find his vocal niche.
TSD..Bass/vocals.........Huge presence in the Shine. Its what you dont hear with The Dude that impresses me most..You dont hear confusion or dominance as with some of the sub sonic brothers..he catches the beat and holds the band where they need to be.Most noticable in simple songs that the crowd could instantly groove to before the recognition had registered..due to his command of the bass and colaboration with the stick man.Had that look of calm and radiated rock at the same time.
Ian ....Drums/Vocals.............Hidden away at the back under what looks like a cooking utensil display stand under-construction...cymbals galore, drums at every angle mics up here over there...Didn't see much of Ian..didn't have to........spot on..Listen to his intro's and outro's coz thats the usual weakness in most outfits...no bother to the Big man.....made the light mans job easy cos u just know when its gonna happen with a really good drummer.nothing abrupt all very polished and together. Vocals...mmmmm Loved Hard to Handle but he did another that was lost in the mix!.....too many good vocalists in this band...any more and you would be G4!! poet or what. Would like to hear him let rip solo esk just a wee snippet for the punters...between songs maybe!!
Band.......Very accomplished performance and what the punters who pay the high beer prices demanded they got.Solid working band with a developing character of their own.
Minus
PA....................... was not up to the job...large venue with big dance crowd sucked the sound in....very bass little or no top or mid for vocal clarity. The Famous Sound Dog did the best with what he had and backline was huge making any mix compensation almost impossible.
Set............Not sure where The Shine strength lies or to that matter where they want it to go....they could take this where they want....medleys of pop favs went down a storm.so did the darker heavy stuff but the chop and change was wave in its effect and the punters seemed unsure of where you wanted them to be. You guys could cut it both ways but at the stage you are at now....please the crowd or please yourself..I think they will love you either way.
Image.........Im not a fan of dress changes smacks too much of drag queens..at different points of the night each member looked like a rocker but then changed!...Andy with cool jacket...how bout a bare/bear chest for the ladies under that but wear the thing all the time.....every damn gig.....(watch the buckle rash on the prs!)Ian forgiven..plenty of sweat always looks good on a drummer....Dude bandana...plain with shine sun logo on front....Neil vest/sweat/light/tatoos/pint glass and towel that was you
Overall
A bench mark for any working Pub/Club band..You come away with the feeling you have been Entertained, any critisms are very small in what was a good gig.The set up problems were taken in their stride and lesser bands would not have coped or carried their frustrations into their performance. I would pay to see The Shine cos they do what it says on the tin!

Cool Tim!! :thumb:
Thanks for that mate! I was a wee bit confused where the "minus" started and ended but I think a pretty fair picture painted!
What you forgot was the impact that you and Sound Dog contributed - great stuff! And cheers again for this - also SD's yells of "Show us yer tits!" out the van window were priceless!!
So, for your combined help last night and the favourable review, I'll stick to my word and create you the new forum!

Re: Other Band Gig Reviews
Tim,
Appreciate the feedback and thanks for helping out. Mr Snake was invaluable.
I think the poblem on the PA was the fact that we thought the house PA would do more thanjust sit there. Anyway we live and learn. Good gig, a cracking view from the stage (yes I am talking about that blonde) and a good night

Re: Other Band Gig Reviews
I can only echo what the others have already said. Your comments are much appreciated, though probably not as much as your help and humping skills last night if I'm going to be totally honest!

Humping... there was humping? Damnit... always miss the good bits, couldn't see a thing with those lights (yay for the lights!) in my face.
But yes, help is always greatly appreciated... I wish I could reciprocate but it's kinda hard seeing as how we play together.

Re: Other Band Gig Reviews
Yeah its all rock and roll innit
Maybe we could try lowering the lights and having them pointed upwards, instead of down and in your face sorta thing.
Of course to have one on each side would be better than having the 2 of them on the same side... get an even cooking effect going on there then, I'm working on that.
... and :flippa: to you too ya bisom!
