 Original stuff
Ok, maybe the time's right to post a few samples of some of my original stuff.... It's not big, it's not clever and it's not particularly brilliant but here's a wee sample.

This is the original "just me & a drum machine" version of Saturday Night. This is the one which has been adopted by The Shine at a number of gigs. There was another version of this I recorded with more guitars, keyboards etc. but was a bit over produced. This one is cleaner and ballsier - although I've now worked out a solo!!

With You is probably my favourite of all the songs I've ever written. What I was trying to capture was a kinda Brandon Lee / The Crow type thing. A rainy city night-time scene where vampires and fires are the rule of the day. I just love the keyboard theme running through and, considering the early stage of my guitar noodling, the solo still brings the hairs up on the back of my neck! This was my first attempt at a guide track and drum drop in - hence the vocals are a bit low. Still my fav though....

This is a VERY old track - written back in very early 90's and recorded on my original 4 track when I could only record one track at a time! The theme was a kinda "longing" song for an ex-girlfriend who used to love Last Tango In Paris (Adrian'll remember her). I suppose this is a kinda "what if I hadn't dumped you" song.

Ok, so what's going on here? Well originally it was themed on a female security guard I had and I thought "girl's got balls" being in security frontline. Then I decided to change it in the lyrics. It became a song about a girl fronting a rock band... Hmmm, a Carol lech song?? Musically it was me playing about big time with loads of settings on my effects unit - somewhat unsuccessfully!! Check out the flange on the guitar near the start!! Anyhow, Girl's Got Balls Ye Ken....

I think this is a fab idea... get some original stuff on here... so fabby in fact I think you should create a separate doo daa for it under "Meet The Guys".. loadsa original stuff... cool... inspired me to go listen to some of mine.
You're also a blethering bastard. "I like to keep mine radio friendly at about 3 minutes"... yeah right...

Saturday Night, yup I like playing that, nice n rocky... how about sometime you write the other half of the verses?
With You, don't know what you're singing about cos as you said the vocals are very low. I'm guessing it's either an "I Love You", or a "Please Dont Dump Me" song. Its a haunting little number isn't it.
Very First Moment, another haunting kinda melody, nice.
Girls Got Balls, hehe, effects on or wot. Dont touch that flanger! I can just hear The Shine doing this one, thumping drums, solid bass, palmed chords... little bit quicker (isnt everything we do)... sorted.
I still think we should get together a small set of originals and these could be a start you know? Maybe that's not your intention, but it's a thought.
Oh... and finally, it is big, it is clever and anything someone writes themselves is brilliant and opinions from people who have no ability for song writing don't count... if even just one person hears a song and enjoys it, then it's worthwhile!

This is all, pretty much, true Mr Dude!!
OK, to clarify...
1) I've NEVER said my stuff was radio friendly sub-4 minute stuff. In fact if I write something less than 4 minutes, I tend to add more into it!!
2) With You - no, it's a kinda "comfy in front of an open fire, with candles having a shag" kinda song, with a gothicy feel.
3) Very First Moment - I think my comments said it all. Don't know about haunting - this was VERY early on in my recording noodling!
4) Girl's Got Balls - yeah, I'd be happy to Shiny this. Consider the version on here as "scrapbook". It was an early example of my analogue recording effects overkill! By the way, the effect was a phaser that I'd just set up, not a flange (yeah, I said flange Iain - knock yourself out!!)
On your other comments, I'm happy to try ANYTHING of mine with The Shine - it's just a case of what The Shine wants to do. Open book, me... I'll keep sticking stuff up periodically as it's a shame not to use the 500Mb of Filelodge! There is another one I want you to hear...
Thanx for the comments about big, clever etc.... Totally agree! As a wannabe writer, I sometimes think "what's the point if no-one hears them" That's why I stuck some samples here. It's true though, one person appreciating makes it all worthwhile. Here's a couple of examples... When I was with Apex, we recorded one of mine called Heart Of A Lion which the SNP wanted to adopt as their campaign song in the 90's. I refused consent 'cos I disagreed with their politics. Saturday Night - back in the early 90's a young lady did me a very nice full striptease to this song. Moving forward, we played it with Must Hang at the Nazareth gig in 2002 (with about as much practice as we had for GITG). What a buzz having 1300 people singing along to your own lyric by the second chorus!!

No no no Adrian...!! You're thinking of Barbara who was and is a VERY nice (and highly shaggable) lady - I did, you didn't!!
The striptease was a completely different end of the scale - slapper but it worked for me at the time!!

However, we've moved into a new gear - Neil's originals exist but Shine originals are the future!!!
