My Friend Always - 8/30/04

My friend always, in shades of gray.
Nothing black and white between us.
Nothing clearly defined.
The bold colors carefully suppressed.
Hiding inside the written reality
so that I might taste you,
even the barest sampling
of your hair, your skin, your eyes
becoming my feast.

My friend always, my temptation,
growing to be my ache.
You are the image on the other side of the glass,
and I press my fingers against the cold surface
wanting to touch you.
And I feel the warmth of you filtering through,
and the tantalizing connection
fills my heart with longing
and my eyes with tears.

My friend always, playing in the shadows,
always partly concealed.
The beauty of your eyes masked,
shades on the windows to your soul,
a soul that is more than you want it to be
and more than you let anyone see.
You reveal only two dimensions of yourself,
but it is the third dimension of you that I see
and that I feel touching me as I drift off to sleep.

My friend always, my refuge in my pain
offering me your shoulder,
touching your skin to mine beneath a blanket of comfort,
sharing your warmth with me
when I was too lost to feel my own.
My sweet distraction, luring me from the depths
of my darkness, beautiful words falling from your lips
as you let your hair fall loose,
seducing me back to the surface, to the light.

My friend always, who would be more,
who is more, who will always be more.
My love is in my words that long to caress you,
to stir your body as well as your heart;
that long to reassure you, to make all your fears go away;
that long, but long within the silence of inadequacy,
leaving words left unsaid, feelings unexpressed,
and nothing to say I love you
but my soundless breath against your ear.

And by and by my Soul returned to me, And answered "I Myself amd Heav'n and Hell"
