Homosexuality in an Over-Populated Species - aka My Cats are Gay - Saturday, December 04, 2004
And it is now official…Jay and Joeneen are homosexuals.
I have wondered about him, and his brother Joeneen (well, considering Joeneen started out as Jo-neen and was believed to be female, I suppose he WOULD have issues… ) for some time. They are both the same age as MarkAngel—who has fathered at least 2 litters of kittens. And despite the fact that they have been exposed to seriously slutty female cats in heat, neither Jay nor Joeneen have shown any sexual interest at all.
Well, today I heard interesting chirping and chattering sounds. But I have no females in heat right now—most likely because they are all knocked up. *glares at MarkAngel, who has a perpetual smile on his face* And there they were. Jay was mounting Joeneen and having a great time. Joeneen didn’t look too upset about it. *nods* You know, a while back when I happened to be around when Jay pee’d in the cat box I thought something was different about the smell. Natural tomcats have a strong smell to their pee (just what you wanted to know), but his smelled more female. *rolls eyes* Is it THAT scary that I know how to tell the difference in the smell of cat pee? I have a lot of cats…
But it appears that Jay and Joeneen are a couple. They have always been close…and they seem happy. And at least Joeneen isn’t likely to get pregnant. Really, with all the cats I have, I STRONGLY encourage homosexuality among them. *thinks* You know, this is sort of a small proof of that theory that says when a population of a certain species is exceeding the capacity of its environment that more instances of homosexuality within that species will occur. Non-breeding pairs. Nature’s solution to over-population. *nods* Wish Nature had suggested that to MarkAngel or Persian or Bear. Or Aroura, Marina, Pretty Kitty Kitty or Baby Girl.
