Japanese Bands Rock SXSW
I had the good fortune of attending the Ben-Ten Japanese Girl Bands showcase at the just-concluded South-By-Southwest music festival here in Austin and I was really impressed. Those girls rocked out.
Of the acts I saw or heard about from first-hand witnessses I would say that the Japanese women were a high point of the festival.
Bands I saw included:
- Kokesi Doll.
Fantastic base player and cute-as-a-button front girl screaming her guts out.
- Noodles
Two guitars and a drumer to die for. Base player had taken "base face" to a new level as her face had the immobility and texture of a manequin, although she did manage a smile at the end of the set.
- Petty Booka
Two ladies in faux cowboy getups (hats, neckerchiefs, chaps over jeans) backed by local Austin blue grass band the Austin Meat Purveyors. Their gimmic is that they play Ukalelies and are cute as buttons with a little sas. Last year they did a Hawaii themed show. This year it was blue grass renderings of rock and country classics. Their blue grass "Material Girl" was priceless. They brought down the house with their close blue grass version of "Born to Be Wild". It was transcendant.
All these bands will be touring the US over the next few weeks, so look out for them.
Cheers,
Eliot
