"NEW" showing at top level of board on all threads

A question I have is regarding a technical aspect of this board. When I'm at the top level of this board the word "NEW" is shown to the left of every single thread at that level. If you drill down one level then you can see where individual posts indicate if they have new posts in them since the last time you looked at them. But at the top level it appears the "NEW" indicator is hardcoded.

Is it possible to have the top level of this board accurately indicate wheather or not a given topic area has new posts?

I've had that happen a few times. I got rid of it using the mark read link near the top of the page, but like I said it does recur from tiem to time.
