MP in Australia want's to ban topless bathing on the beaches
From the Daily Telegraph in Australia:
TOPLESS bathing would be banned on mainstream beaches in NSW (New South Wales) under a conservative push to reclaim the sand.
With women increasingly going au natural, conservative powerbrokers from all sides of State Parliament yesterday supported a ban on topless bathing.
Local councils currently don't fine or prohibit topless bathers as they do not regard bare breasts as nudity.
Liberal powerbroker David Clarke and Labor MP Paul Gibson yesterday vowed to support a Bill by Reverend Fred Nile that would ban nudity at popular beaches like Bondi, Manly and Coogee. Support from both sides of Parliament increases the Bill's chance if it goes to a conscience vote.
"The law should be clear. It must say: 'Exposure of women's breasts on beaches will be prohibited'," Rev Nile said yesterday.
Councils have the power to fine people for bathing nude, but Waverley Mayor Sally Betts said yesterday topless was not nude: "Nude is when you've got no clothes on."
Police can fine people for indecent exposure if they get naked in public.
Labor MP Paul Gibson said topless women made people feel uncomfortable.
"If you're on the beach do you want somebody with big knockers next to you when you're there with the kids," he said.
English tourists Lisa Clarke and Laura Dawson, both 32, have sunbaked topless on almost every continent and along most of Australia's east coast. They were at Coogee Beach yesterday.
Ms Clarke said no one ever seemed to take any notice: "I don't see what the big deal is."
Is there too much topless bathing on our beaches? Vote here and tell us what you think of the proposed ban.

Re: MP in Australia want's to ban topless bathing on the beaches
Fred Nile ..... where do I start? Lets just say he is an ultra moralist who gets elected into the NSW parliament upper house (house of review elected on a proportional representation basis) on a platform of "Christian priciples". All very nice as far as it goes. In reality he is so intolerant and out of touch, that he is treated as a joke. Every so often he comes up with some weird proposal that everyone, except certain sections of the media, ignore.
Atlthough, there are a disturbingly increasing number of politicians funded by the religous far right, one would expect that this latest Nile outburst will, like 99% of his ideas, not get off the ground.
Regards,
Graeme

God forbid that someone would do something that made someone uncomfortable!

Re: MP in Australia want's to ban topless bathing on the beaches
"God forbid any male who tells a woman what she can or cannot wear", or something to that affect was one amusing response. My wife suggested that the Rev Fred comes out with something weird at this time every year - and with no real government action to report on, the media laps it up.
The mayor of the council that covers Bondi Beach stated that there had been only one complaint about topless bathing in the last six years. Probably Fred!
This saga could actually prove positive, as it draws attention to the fact that topless bathing is acceptable and legal on NSW beaches, something which the younger beachgoers may not have been aware.
Cheers,
Graeme

Re: MP in Australia want's to ban topless bathing on the beaches
From the Global edition of the International Herald Trubue.
SYDNEY, Australia:
A Christian lawmaker has proposed legislation that would ban women from sunbathing topless on Sydney's beaches, where bare breasts have been a common sight for decades.
Critics were quick to condemn the measure — first reported Tuesday on the front page of the city's The Daily Telegraph newspaper — as unnecessary and a distraction from real concerns.
Leaders of the two major parties in the New South Wales state Parliament, where the bill will be introduced in the coming weeks, have effectively killed it by arguing that local governments should be left to decide the boundaries of decent exposure.
But Reverend Fred Nile, president of the minor Christian Democratic Party and an outspoken legislator, contends it is an important clarification to the existing law that bans nudity. Australian local councils can fine people for being naked on beaches not designated as nudist beaches, but none considers topless women to be naked.
"The law should be clear," Nile was quoted as telling The Daily Telegraph.
"It must say: 'exposure of women's breasts on beaches will be prohibited,'" he added. He was not immediately available for comment Tuesday.
Mayor Sally Betts, whose Waverley Council area includes Sydney's famous Bondi Beach, said she was aghast that state lawmakers would consider cracking down on topless sunbathing when Sydney faced far greater social problems.
"We've got alcohol-related violence, we've got underage drinking and anti-social behavior in the public domain — those are really important issues," Betts told Fairfax Radio Network, adding that her constituents never complained about topless women.

Re: MP in Australia want's to ban topless bathing on the beaches
Not too much wrong on the beach in Australia at the moment. Wore my g-string on a crowded 'family beach' yesterday with no problems.
Don't blame all of us just because we have a few weird politicians. The USA elected George Bush (more than once), but that doesn't mean we think all Americans are loonies!
Cheers,
Graeme

Re: MP in Australia want's to ban topless bathing on the beaches
Thats why radical religious people like Mr Nile need to stay out of politics. Why should he be able to impose his views on people when most of the people it would affect dont even follow his religion? Thats why there is such a thing as seperation of church and state (I dont know if Aulstralia has the same thing as the US or not but they should).
