Topless cafe gets Maine town planners' OK

Wednesday, January 7, 2009

VASSALBORO, Maine (AP) — Vassalboro's planning board has approved an application for a coffee shop with topless waitresses despite opposition of most residents who showed up.

More than 50 residents showed up for Tuesday night's meeting and most of them voiced disapproval of the idea. Ellsworth businessman Donald Crabtree plan to open the topless cafe within 30 days at the site of the former Grand View Motel on busy Route 3.

Planners said the central Maine town has no ordinance to regulate businesses' uniforms — or lack of them. They say the proposal met the town's 10 performance standards, which are mostly related to safety, parking, traffic and signs.

good news. its sounds like it's not so much topfreedom though. more like having strippers for waitresses. still sounds like a fun place to get a coffee.

Additional information on the situation in Maine:

Several courts here have ruled that women who are nude in public are not guilty of indecent exposure because their genitals are internal, unlike men's genitals, and breast exposure is not indecent.

However, some localities, including the cities of Portland and South Portland, have ordinances restricting "topless" entertainment. South Portland requires women to wear pasties, and this includes women who may be inclined to sunbathe topfree at the beach. Portland restricts "topless" joints, but has no ordinance against being topfree in public. We have the word of the deputy police chief that it is legal in Portland, and a few years ago their was an anti-Iraq-War "Nudity for Peace" demonstration with topfree women and no arrests.

@newfieguy

I don't know if I'd say like having strippers for waitresses. Strippers usually put on a sexy dancing show. This sounds like nothing more than one step more skin than you'd find at a place like "Hooters" or "Hawaiian Tropic." I used to work in a sports bar where we could wear shorts and tank tops. We were supposed to cover our bellies but they usually gave us a little slack in that department. Good for me since I'm tall and skinny and most tank tops that fit me won't come all of the way down, especially if I'm moving around.

nakedgirl, you're probably right. that's just the way i imagined it. i can't think of anyone who would apply for that kind of job other than strippers. it seems like the women would be on display for a bunch of guys looking for a show. also, having the waitresses being forced to be topfree kinda takes the freedom away from it. i could be way off. it could be a very relaxed, casual coffee shop. i'd like to find out more about it when it opens. i wonder if female customers can also be topfree, or even male customers for that matter.

I have known a couple of women who have worked in topless joints who were not strippers. The tips probably are good and no special skill is required.

But nobody is putting a gun to their heads and making them work there. If they are uncomfortable about it, other jobs are out there. I guess this makes it more a "topless" place because it's not topfree optional.

Actually, the vibe I get from some of our female posters here is that they would welcome a job like this if the money is decent. emoticon

There's an old joke about a woman who applies for a job in an establishment such as this: The manager says, "Fill this out"... and hands her a bra.

When a "topless" donut shop opened in Portland (Maine) a female co-worker about 60 years old said that she would apply for a job and charge age discrimination if she was not hired.
